It is pretty amazing what came out of Seattle in the 90s.

I consider Jimi Hendrix to be a solo act, same with Elvis.

Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands, but i would have a hard time saying they were the best American bands, i think GNR is closer to that

I have to give props to Aerosmith and KISS, i mean they laid down a lot of the ground work for everything else, i think

i don't really even like to listen to them much...

now, if we weren't limited to this continent it's a tough choice between the Beatles and Zeppelin

oh and Rush is technically "American" right? (i'm still not that impressed with them)

For the record, the answer is Guns N Roses.

    Hint to everyone:

Just because you weren't born until 1985 doesn't mean that American bands didn't get invented before that.

ok, so CCR, Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles should all be in there somewhere as well

i'm too young to have been around while CCR was around, but i caught the tail end of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac as a kid

Yeah, it means nothing good has been written since that.

When I say Guns N Roses, I mean the real band.

Not the paranoid Raider-jersey, bucket of chicken one.

    what about Primus?

best bassist ever, with RHH second

and STP is okay, but they don't have a single song equal to anything off of Ten

I forgot about Fleetwood Mac, but they have 2 limeys. They are great. I would rather get hot bacon grease thrown in my face than listen to The Eagles.

Dean, how on earth could you not like U2.

Sunday Bloody Sunday, written describing events in the
early 70's in which innocents were bombed.

and one of the best songs ever, Pride................

early morning, April 4, shot rings out in the Memphis
sky, free at last.......they took your life but they could
not take your Pride.......In the name of love, one man
in the name of love. (these lyrics about Martin Luther
King and later in the song the lyrics about Jesus are
some of the most meaningful in music's modern era.

I am surprised no one mentioned R.E.M.

    Eddie Vedder by Local H

    Quarters on the eyes
    Rejected Sacrifice
    Cauterized at best
    Failing your litmus test
I know it's dumb to say
    But turnabout's fair play
    Always knew that you
    Were suffering a fool

You go ahead - as good as dead

    Okay - I understand
But I don't want to be your friend
    I don't need another friend
    I've got too many friends
    If I was Eddie Vedder
Would you like me any better?
    That's it - I quit - I don't give a shit

You go ahead - as good as dead

    xing,

If it's lyrics you need listen to poetry or Bob Dylan. I also can't get into Ireland's political struggles. Bunch of lunatics.

To me it's all about the music. The actual musical talent with one's instrument of choice, and the style/energy one plays said instrument with.

Some one-named geek strumming chords on a guitar while bono screams "in the name of love" in a Tom Waits on estrogen voice just doesn't trip my trigger. Sorry.

Uh sorry, but John Entwhistle (The Who), Geddy Lee (Rush), and Mel Whatshisname (Grand Funk) are at least 3 bassists I can think of who would give him a run for his money.

Best bassist I have heard in a loooong time is Danyel Morgan with Robert Randolph & the Family Band.
