AMES, IOWA – The Sooners rolled into Ames Saturday and rolled out with what they came for – a win. In a tough, defensive contest, OU prevailed over Iowa State 27-13.

Dillon Gabriel was 15-26 for 148 yards and a score. Punter Michael Turk also had a TD pass on a fake field goal. Jalil Farooq led all Sooner receivers with four catches for 74 yards and a score. Drake Stoops had three catches for 34 yards, while Marvin Mims had two for 16, Eric Gray had two for 14, Brayden Willis had two for 10, and kicker Zach Schmit had a catch for a score on the fake field goal.

Gray led the Sooners in rushing with 101 yards and a score on 20 carries, while Marcus Major added 29 yards on 12 carries. Farooq had two carries for 26 yards, while Gabriel carried for 17 yards on the day.



The Sooners took the opening kickoff and immediately committed a holding penalty that derailed the possession. They went three-and-out and punted the ball to ISU at the Cyclone 21. Two plays later, Woodi Washington gathered in the first of three OU interceptions on the day, and the Sooners were back in business at their own 42. They moved to the ISU 13 before Gray fumbled it back to the Cyclones to blunt the OU drive.

ISU picked up a first down on the ensuing possession but was stuffed on a fourth-and-one from the ISU 47, and OU took over in good field position. Six plays later, Zach Schmit knocked through a 41-yard field goal, and the Sooners led 3-0 with 6:31 to play in the first quarter. ISU answered with a field goal that tied the game at 3 with 2:08 to play in the first quarter. The Sooners would then take a lead they would never relinquish.



Taking over on their own 15 after the kickoff return, the Sooners quickly moved down the field. Gabriel hit Gray for 11 yards, then Gavin Freeman ran for nine, Gabriel kept for nine, and Major ran for seven. Gray then ran for 11 to give the Sooners a first down at the ISU 36. Three plays later, Gabriel and Stoops connected for 14 yards and a first down. The drive would stall at the ISU two-yard-line. Schmit came out to kick another field goal, but instead took a flip from holder/punter Michael Turk and weaved through the ISU defense for a touchdown. OU led 10-3 with 12:23 to play in the first half.

After an ISU three-and-out, OU took over on their own 35. 14 plays and 48 yards later, Schmit knocked through a 34-yarder that made it 13-3 Sooners with 6:30 to play in the first half. ISU would add another field goal with 45 seconds to play in the half to forge the halftime score of 13-6 Sooners.

ISU took the opening kick of the second half and picked up a single first down before being forced to punt. The teams then exchanged punts before the Sooners scored again. Taking over on his own 22, Gabriel found Mims on first down for eight yards, then Gray ran for five and Gabriel for eight more. A penalty gave the Sooners a first down at the ISU 40. Three plays later, Gabriel found a wide-open Farooq behind the defense for a 41-yard TD that made it 20-6 with 4:18 to play in the third quarter.

After another exchange of punts, ISU closed the gap. A 12-play, 53-yard TD drive for the Cyclones featured a pair of conversions on fourth and long, including the TD play, which came on fourth-and-12. The Sooners led 20-13 with 10:29 to play in the game.

The Sooners went three-and-out and punted the ball back to ISU at their own 31-yard-line on a great 61-yard punt by Turk. Four plays later, Justin Broiles stopped the drive with a pick. After the Sooners couldn’t move the ball, Turk uncorked another bomb, this one traveling 60 yards and getting killed at the two-yard-line. Three plays later, Danny Stutsman picked off an ISU pass and ran it back to the Cyclone two-yard-line. Two plays later, Gray carried it in, and the Sooners led 27-13 with 4:36 to play in the game.

ISU would reach the OU three-yard-line in the dying moments of the contest, but failed on a fourth and one from there, turning it over on downs. The Sooners would then run out the clock to secure the victory.
