NORMAN – The Brent Venables era started off with a bang Saturday in steamy Norman, as the Sooners routed the visiting Miners of UTEP, 45-13 before a sellout crowd of 83,173. The win was the Sooners’ sixth straight season opening win. They are 20-3 in season openers since 2000 and 99-23-6 in season openers all time.

New Sooner QB Dillon Gabriel was 15-23 for 233 yards and two touchdowns and looked comfortable in command of the offense. Marvin Mims led all...

NORMAN – The Sooners overcame a sluggish offensive start Saturday night against Kent State to register a 33-3 win in the first night game of the season. The Sooners trailed 3-0 deep into the second quarter before a TD drive gave them the halftime lead, then dominated the game in the second half.

Dillon Gabriel was 21 of 28 on the evening for 296 yards and three scores. Marvin Mims was spectacular, with seven catches for 163 yards and a pair of scores....

    LINCOLN, NE
    – Oklahoma went into Lincoln Saturday and did what good teams do to bad ones – they dominated. The Sooners fell behind 7-0 before rattling off 49 unanswered points to run away from the Huskers, 49-14.

Dillon Gabriel was stellar, going 16 of 27 for 230 yards, two TDs, and no picks. Marvin Mims was equally outstanding, registering four catches for 66 yards. Jalil Farooq had three catches for 58 and a score. Drake Stoops (who was serenaded...

    NORMAN
    – New season, new coach, same problem. Kansas State continued its recent history as the Sooners’ purple Kryptonite, as they came into Norman Saturday night and walked out with the win, 41-34, in a game OU never led. In case you haven’t been paying attention, we are an overturned call on an onside kick in Manhattan last season from being on an active four-game losing streak to the Wildcats. As it is, they have won four of the last six in Norman...

    FORT WORTH, TEXAS
    - I waited until today to post this, mostly because if I had done it yesterday, the entire report would have been this:

Shitshow. No further notes. On to Texas. See you on the Midway.

That still applies, and is the journalistic equivalent of what the coaching staff should do, which is burn the tape and forget it ever happened. That said, I figured I should offer some wisdom for those of you, unlike me, who did not sit through...

DALLAS, TX - They say it's darkest just before the dawn, and that you have to hit bottom before you can start going up. That's where we are, so hopefully they are right.

The Road Warrior Report - Kansas Review - October 16, 2022

NORMAN – It’s amazing the difference one person makes. From a unit with literally no prospect of success without Dillon Gabriel in the Cotton Bowl last Saturday, the Sooner offense transformed into a juggernaut with him yesterday. The Sooners racked up over 700 yards of offense in their 52-42 win over a ranked Kansas team on Owen Field Saturday afternoon.

Gabriel was as outstanding this week as the Sooner QBs were inept in Dallas. He went 29-43 for...

    AMES, IOWA
    – The Sooners rolled into Ames Saturday and rolled out with what they came for – a win. In a tough, defensive contest, OU prevailed over Iowa State 27-13.

Dillon Gabriel was 15-26 for 148 yards and a score. Punter Michael Turk also had a TD pass on a fake field goal. Jalil Farooq led all Sooner receivers with four catches for 74 yards and a score. Drake Stoops had three catches for 34 yards, while Marvin Mims had two for 16, Eric Gray had...

The Road Warrior Report - Baylor Review - November 6, 2022

    IMG_4935.JPG

NORMAN – The Sooners’ recent resurgence took a detour Saturday in Norman, as OU dropped a hard-fought game to Baylor, 38-35. The Sooners’ mistakes were really the difference, as three first-half interceptions led to 10 Baylor points in what turned out to be a three-point game.

Dillon Gabriel was 22-34 on the day, for 261 yards, two TDs, and the aforementioned three picks. In fairness, two of those were tipped balls that weren’t really his fault, and the...

    MORGANTOWN, WEST VIRGINIA
    – The Sooners’ lost season continued down the tubes this afternoon on a cold and rainy day in West Virginia. Penalties and inconsistent play teamed up to doom the Sooners to a second straight three-point loss, this one by the count of 23-20, as the Mountaineers hit a short field goal on the final play of the game to seal it.

Dillon Gabriel was 17-28 for 190 yards on a day when it was hard to throw/catch the ball due to the...
