The Richter Scale use to measure earthquakes, is named for Dr. Charles Richter (1900-1985). With Beno Gutenberg in the 1930s, Richter developed a device to measure the movement of the Earth during a quake. The device is essentially a continually unwinding roll of paper over which is suspended a pendulum with a marking device. The scale is "logarithmic" (whatever that means), so that an earthquake rated 7 is 10 times stronger that a 6. Today, April 26, is Richter's birthday; I figured you'd all want to know.

The difference between a 1 and a 4 is nothing. The difference between 4 and 8 is huge. I've been in a couple of 5+'s. I gotta tell ya, you'd at least think you could count on the earth not moving under you feet. When that happens, you may reconsider what you know as your safety net. Word.

JWTK - one question comes to mind after looking at the graphics. What on earth is a -1 magnitude? I figure 0 is no movement, and the positive numbers are varying amts of movement. So, what the heck is a negative number? Movement is the past or future?

Richter set the 0 magnitude as an event that happened 100km away that moved the needle on his device 1 micrometer. Newer equipment is more sensative and can take readings below the 0 rating. 0 is not a nonevent, it is just a mild event. Like Farenheit, we can take readings below 0. Sorry for the spelling.
