I'm thinking about getting some type of full auto machine gun and possibly one with a silencer. The process to get one seems fairly straightforward and easy. Does anyone have any experience with this?

why?

Hate to be the bearer of bad tidings bro, but "full auto" and "silencer" are pretty much mutually exclusive.Originally Posted by 1stTimeCaller
Anyhoo, go old school and get a repop Thompson sub-machine gun. Then, locate an amenable gunsmith to provide the essential modification. Presto, you got a functional chopper that will spew .45 ACP all day long.

I'm thinking a .22 would be just as fun and much easier on the wallet.

I once fired a Thompson .45. It is an amazing firearm. The sound is a very stacatto that sounds like "SIX-TY-FIVE-DOL-LARS-PER-PULL."Originally Posted by 1stTimeCaller

Contact a dealer with an appropriate Class license and be willing to register and pay the fed firearms tax and you are done.
You can also get a Ruger 10/22 with a 30 round banana clip and a trigger attachment that is basically a crank that rotates and gives a gatling gun effect. Not full auto but it is great fun.
Meddle not in the affairs of dragons, for thou art crunchy and good with ketchup.
I figured he had to be confusing "flash" or "recoil suppressor" with "silencer." I can't imagine how a silencer would work with a fully automatic firearm because all a "silencer" does is retard the muzzle velocity of the round to sub-sonic speed. That said, its baffling would quickly be shot away on an automatic weapon and would probably be pretty dangerous to the firer too.
Anyway, one of these days, I'd sure like to get me a licensed Tommy gun, despite the fact that shooting a hundred rounds of .45 ACP in a few seconds is a danged 'spensive pleasure.

If you can afford it, get a registered full-auto M-16
1) .223 (5.56 NATO) Ammo is still relatively cheap
2) The lower receiver on the AR-15 is the registered part, and on this particular design, there is very little 'wear and tear' during use. Thus, you could literally wear the barrel, bolt, and bolt-carrier out from firing thousands of rounds, and buy a new kit for $500 bucks, put your registered receiver on it and you're good to go for another 20 thousand rounds!
A registered M-16 reciever is going to cost about as much as a nice used car. Def lazer fc's politicians decided that only the rich should be able to afford machine guns back in 1986.

Frankly, I can't imagine things getting so bad that you would need to fire in full auto with the silencer affixed since obviously, the bad guys already know you're there.

I can't really see that big a need for full auto anyway - if you can't do enough damage to put down a target with a three-shot burst, you need a bigger weapon anyway. But hey, whatever.Originally Posted by Okla-homey

Here's where I break with my liberal buddies...I love me some guns.
Someone mentioned getting a "registered" gun. Why would you do that on purpose and what exactly are the rules for full auto now?

There was only 1 recorded murder with a legal full auto since the 1930's, but Congress felt compelled to add this law anyway. All legally held machine guns possessed prior to 1986 were 'grandfathered' in, and are still legal to purchase today. But as you can imagine, with a limited supply of F/A guns, the price on a registered F/A can be extremely high. An M-60 can go for over $100,000. Yeah, no kidding.Originally Posted by Rogue
It is almost impossible to take a gun made after 1986 and convert it to full auto legally. You have to be a dealer to law enforcement or a manufacturer.
