All my life, I've heard my peeps refer to scary, monster-y creatures as "boogers." I think I undertand why now. We aren't Cherokee, but it must have joined general Okie parlance via the Cherokee.
I still recall my sainted grandmother telling me to be careful walking home when I would leave her house after dark "or a booger might get me."

Dad's family in Kentucky calls scary monsters "boogers" too. I thought it was some variant of "Boogie-man".
