Free Furniture if UCLA beats USC

A company in L.A. is offering "free furniture" to anyone if ucla beats usc this weekend.

A few stipulations:

1. You must purchase said furniture this weekend - BEFORE the game.

2. You must spend at least $2000.00

3. All sales are final -

The company - H.D. Buttercup is advertising this on the local radio stations here in L.A. - I guess that they will "give you your money back" if UCLA pulls the upset.

I seem to remember a company doing the same thing back east somewhere this same year - and the "underdog" won - they lost something like $300,000.00.

Does anyone know if it was the same company?

You can buy insurance for stuff like that, so the furniture store will only be out the cost of the policy if UCLA wins.

If he sells the furniture at retail prices with no markdown then he's really just making a pretty good bet. He doubles his margins over the 3 day period if USC beats UCLA and he doesn't have to face the Vegas line to make his bet. I'm sure the markup on this furniture from wholesale to retail is very high. Also if he makes applicable to cash only purchases then there are two benefits - (1) his margin on cash is higher and (2) he minimizes his downside while attracting more credit sales (from customers disappointed they didn't read it right but still wanting the furniture). This can't be all that bad a promotion really.

There was a company here in Tulsa with a similar offer if OU could shut Texas out a few years back. I think 2003 scared them out of it, though. Good thing for them, I guess.

Doubt he lost much since you had to buy the furniture BEFORE the game, and i doubt very many people had that kind of confidence to plunk down 2K
