So the most boring part of my job description involves copy editing scholarly articles related to the legal profession.

A recent article I edited contained the word "lynchpin." I get this letter today from a subscriber whom I've never met or heard of informing me that "The English language does not contain the word 'lynchpin.' Perhaps I meant to say 'linchpin'?"

But a quick check of ol' Webster's reveals that lynchpin is an acceptable variant of linchpin.

So. I copied the page from the dictionary. Now I am trying to figure out what to Sharpie on the page alongside the circled entry.

I like "In yo' face, *********."

But I am open to suggestions.

I once was writting copy for John Coleman (the old Good Morning America weather guy). I wrote "develope" in a write-up and he called me up to say that was incorrect. I immediately informed him that I looked it up and it was an acceptable spelling in Webster's. He said "oh" and told me to keep up the good work. Then he hung up.

So just copy the dictionary page and tell them its acceptable. Good enough...and you get to chuckle...

i'd make a copy of the bookstore section of the yellow pages and inform said ********* that this is where a dictionary can be purchased....

but that's just me.
