He still has plenty of time to de-commit.

Kelvin is gone. We don't have to worry about that now.

I'm glad to see us get at least one commit now. I have a question for the board. Supposedly we got in trouble for contacting James during his junior year. Yet, the 'tards from Stillwater have a verbal commit from a current sophomore. How does that work if they weren't contacting him ahead of time?

Davis is awesome. Kelvin was going to offer him and Blake Griffin before he jumped ship. I've had a chance to see Davis play since 8th grade and he's the real deal. A Ryan Minor type only with more upside and explosiveness.

Yeah, because highschool kids aren't whimsical and they never, ever change their minds after committing to a school.

I like that Capel signed an Okie as his first player.

We do have and have always had good talent in our own state.

Elk City junior commits to the Sooners
By GUERIN EMIG World Sports Writer
    5/3/2006

NORMAN -- Jeff Capel received some much-needed good news on the recruiting front Tuesday afternoon when he picked up his first verbal commitment as Oklahoma basketball coach.

Cade Davis, a 6-5 wing coming off his junior year at Elk City High School, committed during a visit to the OU campus.

"He was sold on Coach Capel from the minute he walked in the door," Elk City coach Jim Denton told OUInsider.com. "He committed on the spot."

That's a welcome development for the Sooners on several levels.

Davis was expected to be one of the state's most sought-after recruits next year. He averaged 25 points and nine rebounds a game last season, then drew some notice on the recent national AAU circuit.

Davis' Athletes First AAU teammate is Blake Griffin, the 6-7 senior-to-be from Oklahoma Christian School who Capel also hopes to sign for the 2007-08 season. Having Davis come aboard won't hurt OU's chances of landing Griffin, the younger brother of Sooner sophomore forward Taylor Griffin.

Three of five signees from last November have reopened their recruitment in the wake of Kelvin Sampson's departure for Indiana.

If Scottie Reynolds, Damion James and Jeremy Mayfield

wind up playing elsewhere, Capel can either plug their holes with late signees between now and the start of the 06-07 school year, or save scholarships for his 07-08 recruiting class.

Capel is going to do fine and in time the program will recover from the turbulence of change.

At least this kid probably has local loyalties.

New Oklahoma head coach Jeff Capel has landed his first catch in the 2007 class with the commitment of Cade Davis, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound wing player from Elk City, Okla.

"I went up there yesterday to meet with Coach Capel for the first time in person," said Davis. "I got to know him better and got an idea of what he wants to do and how he will run the program. They offered, and it seemed like the best thing to do."

One reason it was an easy decision for Davis to commit on his visit is that he has grown up a fan of the Sooners program.

"I've always been a big fan of Oklahoma, growing up with the Sooners," he said. "This a great opportunity for me to play in my home state and close to home."

Davis had offers this spring from a host of mid-major schools, including Tulsa, Oral Roberts and Wichita State, and he recently fielded calls from Nevada and Washington State.

Having averaged 25 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists per game as a junior, Davis will be called upon to knock down jumpers and play a solid all around game for the Sooners.

"I need to get stronger and build my upper body to be ready for the Big 12," he said. "I'm also going to spend time working on my ball handling."

With the commitment of Davis, the new Sooners coaching staff is hoping to make inroads with their top 2007 recruiting target Blake Griffin, who is a teammate of Davis on the Athletes
