OU Hockey - Sooners Weekly 3/6/06

    *** FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ***

    SOONERS WEEKLY
For the Week of March 6, 2006

    SOONERS FINISH 11th IN NATION!
    OKLAHOMA GOES OVERTIME AT NATIONALS

LAST WEEK’S GAMES - The No. 14-ranked University of Oklahoma® hockey club (20-12-2) played in the ACHA Division 1 National Championship Tournament, hosted by West Chester University, in suburban Philadelphia this past weekend and went to overtime in both games in which they played.

The Sooners were seeded 12th in the tournament and opened against 5th seed Iowa State University on Thursday morning. The Sooners came out shaky and it showed as Iowa State carried the play for the first 15 minutes of the game and taking an early 1-0 lead. However, after suffering through the initial jitters, the Sooners came back to tie the game in the second. A bad bounce of the puck and a blatant missed call by the officials saw OU go down 3-1 in the last minute of the second period, but the Sooners stormed back to tie that game at 3 in the third period and force overtime. In the sudden death overtime, OU pounded the puck at the ISU net for much of the overtime session but the Cyclones connected on a 2 on 1 rush to win the game by a score of 4-3 and relegated the Sooners to the consolation round.

The Sooners’ next opponent in the tournament was the University of Arizona, losers to Lindenwood University in OT 3-2 the previous day. Arizona scored early and the Sooners tied the game at one goal apiece. In the second period, OU scored three goals to take a commanding 4-1 lead into the second intermission. The third period saw both teams trade goals to get to 5-2 before a tremendous Arizona rally in the last 10 minutes of the game to tie the contest 5-5. Overtime loomed again for the Sooners, but this time, the Sooners capitalized on their chance, scoring just 38 seconds into OT to win the game 6-5.

With the win, Oklahoma closes out the 2005-2006 season with a record of 20-12-2 and will finish 11th in the nation in the ACHA D1 Coaches ranking.
