    MARLINS TO OKC!!!

Wow, this would be great.. Think about Oklahoma with an NBA team, an MLB team, and the Sooners Football team.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Lt. Gov. Mary Fallin has talked to the Florida Marlins about the possibility of having the team move to Oklahoma City.

"It's all very preliminary, but I have received some good feedback from the Marlins," Fallin said in a statement Thursday.
Marlins owner Jeff Loria once owned the old Oklahoma City 89ers Triple-A team.

Fallin said she wrote to Marlins president David Samson last November after seeing reports that the team was considering leaving the Miami area. The Marlins have not been able to strike a deal for a new ballpark in the Miami area.

She said she has spoken by telephone several times to with Marlins vice chairman Joel Mael and sent Marlins' officials a packet of economic development and demographic information about central Oklahoma.

"The Marlins have asked for some more detailed information, and we are working to put that together for them," she said. "I will bringing Chamber of Commerce and local and state government leaders together very soon to begin that process.

"Obviously, one strong sales point has been the tremendous success of the NBA Hornets in Oklahoma City this season. We are suddenly on the map for big league sports.

If the Brick was in Miami, they couldn't fill it on a regular basis.

I really really don't want the first major league team be a MLB team.

Oklahoma isn't that big on baseball.

San Antonio has also made overtures to the Marlins. SA's trying to get the Saints too. Pretty similar situation to OKC.

Seems like that would really cut into the Rangers already-dismal fanbase.

I doubt MLB would allow the move, but you never know.

I doubt it either. SA doesn't have the market I don't think. Supporting an NBA team vs. an NFL or MLB team are a lot different.

We should name them the Oklahoma City Upside Down Shorthorns and then we could use the logo without copyright infringement

No slight against OKC but MLB will go to Las Vegas before it will go to Oklahoma.

One also has to consider how any kind of a move will affect or be affected by MLB's division alignments.

    Re: MARLINS TO OKC!!!

Of all of the possible cities, I don't think any is ideal to support a team.

San Antonio/Austin area -- Not huge on baseball. Austin supports baseball very well, San Antonio doesn't support the Missions at all. If they built a stadium, it would be around San Marcos/New Braunfels.

Portland -- Their PCL franchise has failed so badly that the PCL owns their damn team. Nobody cares about baseball in Oregon.

Norfolk -- Orioles, Nationals, AND Marlins all in Virginia/MD area? I don't see how Virginia/Maryland can support three major league baseball teams.

OKC -- As has been said on here earlier this week, Oklahoma isn't much of a baseball state at all. They impressed me with the support of the Hornets, but MLB is a whole different animal. Especially cutting into OU football season and all.

I thought it was just about a done deal they would move to Vegas, although I'm not sure that's any better than the other cities mentioned.

    Re: MARLINS TO OKC!!!

This is a terrible idea. OKC is my life-long home and I love baseball. That being said, this is not a good match. We're doing well with the Hornets, sure. But 18,000 for 35 games vs. 40,000 for 81 is a much different situation. I just don't think we have the corporate infrastructure to make this happen. Obviously they'll have to build a new stadium. Who's going to pay for it? Tax payers?
Besides, the Marlins should just be contracted anyway. The talent is too diluted and the baseball is suffering. MLB needs about four less teams.

i live in the tulsa area and i think its a bad idea, there is no way it will survive here. its just fine like it is with the Sooners and Hornets. nba season starts as cf is winding down...its perfect. so leave it the hell alone. i like baseball but im not in favor of failure, which is what this would be imo.
