In this case I think it's simply media sensationalism. The doctor commented that the tear was a 4 on a scale of 1-3, but he also said that his references to a possible "career ending injury" were simply directed to ACL/MCL tears in general. The doctor actually had to get on the Bengals web site forums and reassure everyone that the operation went completely fine.
This just in: Carson Palmer dead from lack of ACL.
