    Question about baseball stats

Does anyone here know what the stat "cont%" means? I've never heard of it and can't find its definition online.

    TIA

    Re: Question about baseball stats

Do you have the stat in its context?

Yeah...Looks like the number of times the ball was put into play...either resulting in a hit or an out.

Ive never seen it before, but it does appear to be the percent of the time a hitter put the ball in play. I verified that it is the same number as taking (AB-SO)/AB

That sounds about right. The boy can definitely put the ball into play, but he's struggled since his shoulder injury with ball placement.

That seems like a terrible stat to even care about.

Double plays count more then walks.

Scouts care about those kinds of stats.

It's still the most worthless stat.

Even worse then Slugging % on the third sunday of the month vs left-handed pitchers on a full count.

    Re: Question about baseball stats

I'm thinking because the percentages are so high, it's a measure of the following:

Number of foul balls hit + Number of fair balls hit / Number of pitches swung at.

And that stat is certainly meaningful when you've got a guy coming up to the plate with a runner on second and nobody out and you need to move the runner to third.
Just imagine there's a really obnoxious graphical sig here

I could still care less about it. I know baseball is by far the most quantified sport, but somewhere we gotta draw the line at the meaningless stats.
