And for the folks who like the bar scene, Westport is a GREAT time to mingle with other drunken fans from both sides. Last year at Kelly's was a blast.

I'm usually not a fan of Westport, but it's a lot of fun during the championship weekend. A few drunken ******* KSU fans last year (*gasp*) but most of them were really nice.

Dont forget Free State Brewing Company in Lawrence, makers of one of the top 15 beers in the world, Free State Owd Mac's Imperial Stout. Look it up, visit, they are great.

Stay away from 75th Street Brewing Company, they have cookie-cutter craft beer with not much of interest.

Re: KC Big12 Championship Info Post

I'll offer my help once again this year as well. Not like you sooners are unfamiliar with KC at this point

My biggest recommendation is if you are wanting to go out and drink to stay somewhere between downtown and the plaza. hotel rooms are more but cheaper than a DUI...KC has horrible mass transit especially to the burbs. If you are familying it, stay in the burbs. Most hotels on the Plaza have not opened up rooms yet until both teams are decided so that's something to think about if you can't find a hotel. They aren't requiring 2 night stays...at least the ones I'm familiar with. The Marriott, Sheraton, Embassy, Hyatt, & Westin and Hotel Phillips downtown are all quality places to stay.

KC Crimson's shuttle recommendation I highly recommend as well.

We're not going this year but looks like a few of us are still going (selling most of our tickets) so if you see some purple on the 50 yard line on the OU side....don't throw anything at us

[email protected] if you need any specific information...not that you trust me over a sooner

If you need any bar information especially, that's what I'm good at. I live downtown so I know all the ins and outs of the center of KC and the attractions so email me and I'll be glad to be another CVB agent.

I'm assuming you're making this statement from personal experience. Have you ever been to England, Germany, Mexico, Ireland or Austria tried some of the better beers there? How would you rate them in comparison? I've been to shops here in Europe and several bars with huge international selections as well as local stuff. I've never seen this beer mentioned. Is it exported from the U.S.? I don't drink a lot of beer myself, but when I go and actually do imbibe, I very often catch heat because of the general perceived quality of American beer. It would be nice to be able to order something up for these guys that can actually compare.

I'm impressed with the museums in KC! I never would have guessed that the American Jazz museum is located there, although I have heard some good jazz in my few brief visits there.

Re: KC Big12 Championship Info Post

I'll throw in some more attractions and recommendations...I agree with almost all of suggested above except all those chain restaurants

Crown Center - http://www.crowncenter.com (great place for the kids to blow a day, free attractions)
Union Station - http://www.unionstation.org (cool history of the station museum, couple great restaurants and just a cool place to see the renovation
Liberty memorial - http://www.libertymemorialmuseum.org (Country's only WWI museum. Can ride to the top of the memorial if the weather is good and has 2 artifact museums...larger museum now under construction
KC Holiday Market - http://www.kcholidaymarket.org (just found out about this last night, the City market area is being converted into a holiday village. This is the first year so not sure what to expect
Kemper modern art museum (to go along with the Nelson recommended above) - http://www.kemperart.org

Restaurants: (KC//Crimson hit the burbs/chains more, I'll get some more KC originals)
Lidia's - Great north Italian food
Garozzo's - Great southern Italian food
City Tavern - great fresh oyster bar http://www.citytavern.net
Westport Flea Market - best burgers in KC
    Thai Place - http://www.kcthaiplace.com/
    Lulu's (Thai food) - downtown
Ponak's (mexican food, southwest blvd...best margaritas in town hands down) -
    Bo Ling's (chinese) - http://www.bolings.com/

Bars (I probably recommend more young people bars (under 40) just to let you know...)
Kellys - KC institution, if you've been up here for a prior game, you've probably been here. Westport area
Velvet Dog/Empire Room - younger hipper crowd. Very cool place better when the deck in the back is open..midtown area http://www.velvetdog.com
Vivace - Cool martini bar in the rivermarket
Grand Emporium - Renovated and has live music nightly http://www.grandemporium.com
Harry's Country Club - new bar that is doing the old country roadhouse theme in the rivermarket. Becoming very popular.
Harry's Bars & Tables - westport. Cool bar.
Grandfalloon - Sports bar on the plaza. Good scenery. http://www.thegranfalloon.com
Mi Cocina - athletes and the black pants set.
The Drink on the Plaza - opening end of the month....high end dance club
DB's - gay dance club downtown
Evolution - techno club in westport

That's all for now....when you guys come back for the Championship game next time it's in KC or for the bball tournament after 05 we'll have a whole new set of recommendations for downtown KC which is getting a new arena and a 9 block entertainment district which is sure to be the hub of future parties.

If by 'good scenery' you mean 'hot chicks', then yes, I concur. Wholeheartedly.

For some reason, I can't remember the name of that sushi place on the Plaza where the beautiful people hang out... what's that called? It's another good place to go for the scenery. Actually, any of the bars in the Plaza area are great for people watching.

Powercat - you mentioned that you live downtown - I do too. Where around here do you hang out?

Craft beer is one of my favorite hobbies. In addition to homebrewing, I've tried and rated over 1600 different beers, from everywhere in the country and around the world. My ratings are archived online at http://ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=6533 - I have been to Free State many times, and enjoy their eye for quality.

If you look at the top 50 beers in the world on RateBeer.com, Owd Mac's Imperial Stout is rated #14, though only by about 30 people, considering that it's available at the brewery only on cask and not available in growlers. Sitting at #14 with only 30 ratings is suspect, but there's something to be said when an American-made imperial stout sits up there with world class trappist ales such as Westvleteren and Rochefort.

If you make it to Free State, it's possible that the Imperial Stout will not be available, as it's a bit rare. If they have the Old Backas Barleywine give that a try, as it's also rated in the top 100 in the world. They also have other good stouts, porters and IPA/pale ales that they offer. Plus the food is great!

    Cheers mate,

    Mike

Kona Grill...sushi place. Good scenery. Also Mi Cocina has some nice looking patrons.

SoonerinKCMO....John's deck in the summertime, Tanners/Quaff just for general sports watching, Minskys in the rivermarket is good for sports. Harrys Country Club. That's about all, can't get many friends to head downtown yet

What neighborhood you live in? I just bought a place in Quality Hill....we love it, can't wait for the H&R block/arena/entertainment district to get going.

If you are interested in talking kc stuff, I run a website www.kcskyscrapers.com with a pretty active forum.
