In retrospect this was a huge mistake by Reagan but I suspect he was dealing with the same group of Neocons that later convinced Bush that he needed to intervene in the Middle East for completely different reasons.Originally Posted by Serenity Now
The Soviet Union was always doomed for collapse because it had an unsound political and economic system. The political system of the USSR killed any entrepeneurial spriit that would have helped diversify the economy and since they had an undiversified economy dependent on the sale of raw material(oil, gas, minerals) they could not survive the collapse of oil/commodity prices in the 80's brought about by a collusion between the US and Saudi Arabia.
China learned this lesson well and will end up being a much bigger threat to the US because of their economic modernization and diversity.
