83 was the tail end of 3 consecutive 4 loss seasons when he told his assistants they needed to start winning more. In 84, we had a shot at the NC before losing to UW. In 85, we won it.

You look around, and in a lot of cases, teams who lose that last game before the bowl game, it can have a little bit of an effect. I didn’t do a good enough job being able to erase that, whether it be coaches or players. In the end, we didn’t do a good enough job.
