I'm not being argumentative at all. I think it's worth discussing why anyone would think it's our role or responsibility to "stop" Russia from doing what it wants -- Russia is a sovereign nation perfectly within its rights to act in its own self-interests. It is not in the self-interest of the United States to interfere in their affairs in eastern Europe or anywhere else unless or until they directly move against American territory.

The NATO agreement makes any moves within NATO countries our business. So, it's entirely possible that Putin extends his ambition to include the baltic states, at which point we wouldn't have a choice. I seriously doubt Putin would be that foolish, but it's certainly a possibility, and a real enough one to encourage leaders of those states to ask for NATO to step up their presence within their borders.
