This pretty much sums up what Ive been saying for several years

    Too much, TeeVee,Money.
Unless the Powers that be in Norman Open the purse and demand an elite Coaching staff we will continue to fall behind.

Was hoping that the Sooners would be open to hiring a talent like Muschamp as DC. The admitted stumbling blocks were obviously, the cost of bringing that skill set to OU and what to do with a brother in the system. Either one would probably have ruled him (Muschamp) out with the Sooners, not taking both aspects in consideration. Hey; it would've been on my "Ask Santa List" for this year, nevertheless...

Muschamp will restore the D at Auburn, and get another HC job in a couple of years.

Being reported at $1.6-1.8M. This will give Josh and Mike plenty of headroom for coordinator raises.

An excellent good coach can only stay at OU for an average of 2-3 years (Long, Wilson, Mangino...). The good things are they would 1. lead OU to a good championship game, 2. Recruit, train, and leave OU a good bunch of players, and 3. Leave a good note back to the future coach to continue the success.

The bad coaches could just have a thick head, get drunk, and satisfied with the mediocre records.

And I would have loved to see the Sooners pay the additional $ to Muschamp for a balance of 2 or 3 years. Yup; steep price, but you get what you pay for in him. Can that be said for what we're seeing now?

I'm don't really agree with the author of that piece.

Muschamp took the gig at Auburn because it's a quick, easy transition that pays well. The next attractive head coaching job that comes along will lure him away, so that kinda kills the basic premise of the article. The truth is there aren't enough good head coaches to go around, given the sheer number of FBS schools. So, anyone that's elevated themselves and is identified as head coach material will get swept up. There aren't enough good assistants out there either.

It's a balancing act for every team out there. You have to find a guy that knows his craft, and isn't looking to take the next lateral move as soon as it appears. Part of the reason we've had inconsistency with coaches is because the really good ones move on.

If it truly were an arms race for assistant coaches, and I don't believe that to be true, OU would have no problem opening up the wallet and spending the money.

You just never know. MS hasn't worked out so well, so far, after being fired as a HC and taking the DC job at OU. The difference is OU is paying MS 1/2 what Muschamp will get. It's certainly no guarantee that he will miraculously heal the Auburn defense. The emphasis will always be offense at Auburn as long as Malzahn is head coach. It's extremely difficult to master both sides of the ball.
