The cynic in me doubts their motives as defending the good name of Islam. I believe this has more to do with feeling their power and influence threatened by an outside force they don't control.

But the pragmatist in me says "who cares why?". This is significant because these clerics DO have influence both inside and outside Saudi Arabia.
