The situation in the ME will never change unless/until the Saudi's want it to, which is probably never.
Saudi Arabia is one of the most restrictive countries in the world, yet they are rarely (if ever) the subject of discussion. As long as the world (specifically the west) is energy dependent, things will remain status quo.

The House of Saud has played it's role mostly in order to maintain it's power. They thought they would be overthrown if they didn't pander to the extremists and they were probably correct. It's unclear how long they can stay in power, but I think it is shorter than most believe. Their domestic oil consumption is steadily rising and I've read many articles from oil industry types that think their reserve estimates are greatly exaggerated. If they run out of oil for export, they can no longer buy a cushy lifestyle for the masses in order to maintain support. The fundamentalist clerics will take over at that point because there is no shortage of the BS they can spout.
if anyone votes 3rd party, they are helping the dems to stay in office. As to what the R's will do if they gain power again...well, that's our only hope.

I will vote for all GOP Senate candidates but I will not vote for Tom Cole. He is the poster boy for a RINO.

The pipelines? Arguments are back and forth...they are NOT fool proof safe, but
probably moreso than rail/trucks...Keystone? Nah, that stuff is going overseas
anyway....Bakken, different story...the one through Iowa's 17 counties could be
useful but the developers don't have a sound argument about safety and are really
shady about the whole thing....

If anyone votes Libertarian, they are helping Democrats.
If anyone votes Green, they are helping Republicans. Not possible here but there are Greens on the ballot in other states.
Voting by itself is no hope at all. Getting commitments from candidates before the primaries, and then voting, is the only way for the 99% to have influence. And yes, most Republicans are also in the no-access 99% of the population.

If a third party candidate appeals to constitutionalists and has ffree market economic values and doesn't like unauthorized social spending, that candidate will divide the conservative vote, thereby helping the democrats. Socialism espousing third party candidates hurt the left, by taking votes from the democrats.
The only time I can remember the latter situation happening was when Ralph Nader ran, and took some votes from algore.

We could let ISIS go free and threaten the Saudi government. I think those guys would chop the heads off a few in the royal family. That might get the message across.
Note: I don't really think we should do that but surely Saudi Arabia sees what they have created as a threat.
