Righteous thread. I thought Gastelum look as good as any of our defenders when he was playing with the first team. He was clearly the best player on the field once we started substituting. Really nice surprise given our depth issues at ILB.
If that's true, I'm not sure this is the best time to announce it, after Taco Tech announcing they were ok with us giving B. Mayfield a scholly and then us saying, that's nice but we don't have one now to give him.Originally Posted by cherokeebrewer

Not to mention he hits the books being a First Team Academic All-big 12. Good for him. Congrats
I remember seeing him on the roster a year or two ago hoping he would eventually start, he was home-schooled and a walk on so he has an interesting story, plus he wears my high school number. Great to see his plays today, good for him.
I think we can all agree the senior deserves the scholarship more. This kid put in a lot of work and deserves this. Good job young man, you did the damn thing.

I watched the kickoff fumble recovery in the Sugar over and over. Gastelum got it due to exceptional hustle. I'm a fan!

Is this kid a ""Senior as far as FB eligibility or just a Sr. in school? ie, does he have any eligibility left after this year? I figured he was a Soph or at most a RS JR.
BTW Ball St is leading Iowa 13-3 with about 5 min left in the 4th.
Well, the Fightin Ferentzes pulled it out...two TD's late...
Stoops had one scholarship to give after the incoming class was enrolled. As much as we all like having Mayfield, he's still a walk-on, and will have to prove himself a little more before he's put on scholarship. Gastelum has been in the program for going on 4 years, and earned the scholarship (ahead of Mayfield).
This is Gastelum's final year of eligibility, and he's certainly making the most of it!
I always love seeing guys work themselves into a scholarship. Especially an Oklahoma kid.
As many of you have already said, he played a great game. And I agree, when we had all of the second team in the game, he was the best player out there.
Well deserved!
