Loss of George Brewer

Most of you are too young to know who George Brewer is. He passed away in OKC last Sunday at the age of 85. He may be the last player from Bud's great teams in the late 1940's when he started at RB during a 31 game winning streak. George was a Lubbock HS RB that was recruited by ND, but his mother had Catholic objections and Eddie Chiles referred him to OU. When George arrived at OU and met with Coach Wilkinson, he asked coach Wilkinson what position he played Classic.

His first game as a starter (age 17) in 1946 was against Army in Yankee Stadium. In 1947, he was the part of the first ever RB duo at OU to rush for over 100 yards. Against K-State, he had 135 yds on 22 carries and Buddy Jones had 115 yds on 19 carries. They finished 7-2-1 that year. After playing against Santa Clara in 1948, he broke his leg in the 1948 season and with the return of numerous players from the war, he ended up serving as a back-up in 1948 and 1949.

He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1950, but chose to enlist in the USAF and served overseas in Korea.

Notable Facts: His younger brother, Charlie, won the Texas High School Championship at Lubbock and went to play for UT under Ed Price. He started three years as QB for UT in the early-to-mid 1950s when OU was at its peak. George's newphew, Robert Brewer, was a 1979 Richardson, TX grad and walked on at UT. He started as QB mid-way thru the 1981 season and started in 1982. Beat Alabama in the 1982 Cotton Bowl and finished #3 in the polls.

His great-nephew (Robert's son) is Michael Brewer (former TTU QB and current Virginia Tech transfer). He won 4 state titles as QB at Lake Travis in Austin and will likely be the starting QB at VT this fall.
