    Vets die waiting for appointments

I don't know what's wrong, but it's probably your fault.

I have not used tribal health care yet, but I hear that it's months to get in to see a doctor there as well.

    It's sad but I can't say that I'm surprised

Re: Vets die waiting for appointments

I have a suggestion....notify EVERY veteran that the procedure to get VA
health care now consists of making the VA appointment and notifying his/
her Congressional representative that he/she did and the date of same. The
second step is to notify the rep when the appointment is kept, followed by
WEEKLY updates to the rep's office and a copy to the VA office.

This sort of unmitigated CRAP needs sunlight on it and now. Another solution
might be to establish a civilian medical network that vets can use in place of
a VA hospital, since VA care is centralized in a lot of states, making it difficult
    for some vets to travel.

I can say for certain that if I had to use the VA, I wouldn't stand for the delays!

I have used the VA for a lot of years, It has gotten better as time goes on. I aint complaining. When I have an appointment Im usually in and OUT in under an hour. The docs an nurses are 1st rate IMHO. My only bitch is they dont seem to Pay the Docs enuff and have a Lot of turn over .

Re: Vets die waiting for appointments

I think we likely all have older relatives that don't like to have "a fuss" made over them, so I suspect that some of these that are waitlisted had not seen a doctor in years and only went when it became unbearable or at the insistence of family.

Much like Packer season tickets, it might be best to put your name on the waitlist now before it's too late to wait.

    Repulsive.

Great country we live in these days, the powers-that-be made sure the minority had health care, but can't take care of the people that put their lives on the line for them.

I've used the VA a few times, but honestly it was more of an ordeal than going the private route. I'm fortunate enough to have that option, so many of our brothers don't.

Read up on all the crap happening with the construction of the new VA hospital in Denver. The lack of responsibility and contract oversight at the VA is appalling. The stories that I have heard from some people involved around the construction is kind of like whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. We are working on some (very small) VA projects in Salt Lake and Grand Junction (which I am inheriting) and those are a mess as well on the administrative end.

I have a friend who uses the VA for all of his medical needs. He has nothing but good things to say about the VA hospital and the doctors he's seen in Dallas. I think it all depends on what VA hospital/clinic you go to.

Re: Vets die waiting for appointments

I feel bad for any Vet treated so wrongly. No one deserves to have to wait so long to be seen by a doctor.

I recall a picture of a building just full of files that was s'posed to be converted to digital.

I hope someone cleans up the mess that's been happening for a lot of years.

In 1986, the man who married my Mom was in the VA hospital in OKC
when the big C took him. I remember all the interns were on 100 hours
per week shifts and looked almost like zombies. All they asked of me
and my brothers was "Did we want any heroic efforts?" We said only
that to make him comfortable. This was in December, after Mom went
in April of that year, so I really can't say if they were good or bad then.
Stories I've heard currently, at least in some areas, aren't very good.

Re: Vets die waiting for appointments

I do believe the VA has improved over the years, and the folks that actually staff the hospitals are great people. Many are working in tougher environments at less pay than they would get at a competitor.

    Still, this story is appalling.

We're not talking about 2 or 3 people that got pushed back or ignored. We're talking about 40 ****ing vets. Maybe it's isolated to Arizona, but I'm sure every VA in the country is understaffed and/or underfunded.
