Hundreds of Children Abandoned by Illegals Heading into US
    Sunday, 30 Mar 2014 02:16 PM

Authorities in Mexico have found more than 370 children dumped by people smugglers while trying to make their way into the United States.

The National Institute of Migration (INM) said the huge number of children, from different nations in Central America, were discovered in just a single one-week period in March.

The figure included some 163 children who were abandoned because they were not traveling with an adult family member or an acquaintance, the INM said in a statement.

In many cases, the children had been left in dangerous or difficult transit points by guides who had been paid between $3,000 and $5,000, it said.

The children were found between March 17 and 24 across 14 states, the INM said, without specifying the ages and nationalities of the children.

"The children showed signs of extreme fatigue, foot injuries, dehydration, disorientation and not knowing where they were abandoned," it said.

Authorities arrested nine suspected traffickers in connection with the case.

INM has said the numbers of immigrant children traveling alone through Mexico "has increased significantly" in recent months.

Some 140,000 undocumented immigrants, the vast majority from Central America, attempt to make the perilous journey through Mexico into the United States every year.

Many travel with children and trust "coyotes" to guide them across the border into the United States.

The migrants are often targeted by criminal gangs, with robberies, extortion, rapes, kidnappings and murders common.

US Releases Immigrant Whose Daughter Asked Pope for Help
    Saturday, 29 Mar 2014 08:22 PM

A Mexican immigrant to the United States whose daughter asked Pope Francis for help in stopping her father's deportation has been released from custody, but U.S. immigration officials said there was no papal intervention.

Mario Vargas-Lopez was free on bond from a detention center in Louisiana three days after his 10-year-old daughter, Jersey Vargas, delivered her message to the Pope. He was reunited with his family in Los Angeles Friday.

Jersey Vargas was part of a coalition from Southern California that traveled to Vatican City on Wednesday to deliver letters to the Pope from children of undocumented parents, according to "The Tidings," published online by Los Angeles Archbishop Jose H. Gomez.

The girl was able to speak briefly with the Pope and told him, "My father is suffering," according to the publication. The delegation hoped to convince the Pope to discuss immigration reform in his visit with President Barack Obama two days later.

Vargas-Lopez was arrested in Tennessee in September on a drunk driving charge and served a six month sentence. Upon his release he was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and held in a Louisiana detention facility until he could appear before a judge for removal proceedings, said Bryan Cox, agency spokesman in New Orleans.

But relatives and friends of the Vargas-Lopez family raised $5,000 to post bond, his lawyer, Alex Galvez, said on Saturday. A judge had approved the bond request several days before the girl met with the Pope, but the money was not available until late this week, Galvez said.

The bond amount was not changed as the result of his daughter asking the Pope to intercede, Cox said. Vargas-Lopez is required to stay in communication with ICE and tell agency officials where he is pending his next court appearance, Cox said. "Him being released on bond in no way translates into special action on his behalf," Cox said. "This was standard procedure."

Galvez agreed that the release was unrelated to the daughter's visit with the Pope. He said her message to the Catholic leader was related to the larger need to improve an immigration system in the United States that separates families.

Biden: Illegal Immigrants 'Already American Citizens'
    Friday, 28 Mar 2014 01:55 PM
    By Aaron Stern

Vice President Joe Biden isn't waiting for any type of amnesty tied to immigration reform bill to welcome the nearly 12 million undocumented immigrants in the United States as American citizens.

"You know, 11 million people live in the shadows. I believe they're already American citizens," Biden told a gathering of the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, according to The Hill. "These people are just waiting, waiting for a chance to contribute fully. And by that standard, 11 million undocumented aliens are already Americans, in my view."

Those words might be another instance of the vice president going off the White House script. Even as House Democrats try to move forward on an immigration bill, immigrant rights advocates have criticized the Obama administration's deportation policies for being too aggressive.

As The Hill reported, Obama is trying to fend off Republican critics who paint him as weak on illegal immigration, while also trying to push immigration legislation forward and maintain the Democrats' hold on Hispanic voters.

Biden praised the courage of immigrants who come to a land where they don't speak the language and work hard to provide for their children.

"All they want – they just want a decent life for their kids, a chance to contribute to a free society, a chance to put down roots and help build the next great American century. I really believe that. That's what they're fighting for," Biden said, according to CNSNews.com.

Report: ICE Freed 68,000 Immigrant Criminals Last Year
    Monday, 31 Mar 2014 08:55 AM
    By Drew MacKenzie

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security seized and released 68,000 immigrants last year with criminal records, according to a review of Immigration and Customs Enforcement information.

The Center for Immigration Studies report revealed that ICE agents questioned 722,000 potentially deportable immigrants in 2013, but ended up filing immigration charges with just 195,000 of them, according to Breitbart.

Immigration officials then eventually freed 35 percent, or 68,000, of the immigrants with a criminal history that they had seized back into the U.S. general population when they could have been deported, according to the review.

"The criminal alien releases typically occur without formal notice to local law enforcement agencies and victims," said Jessica Vaughn of the Center for Immigrations Studies. The report’s author added, "Most of these aliens came to ICE’s attention after incarceration for a local arrest."

Breitbart said that the ICE definition of a "criminal alien" is a person who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that is not a traffic violation, including driving under the influence or even vehicular homicide.

After reviewing the report, Alabama Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions slammed the government, saying that immigration law enforcement in the United States "has collapsed."

"The administration’s lawless policies have not only impaired public safety but increased economic suffering for millions of vulnerable Americans by depriving them of their jobs and wages," he said, according to The Daily Caller. "Unfortunately, Congressional Democrats continue to empower this lawlessness. Republicans must work to end it."

The CIS report showed that San Antonio, Texas, had the highest percentage of "criminal aliens" who were seized and then released. There were 36,228 held last year, but 28,680 of them were freed, or 79 percent.

In New York, 7,571 were questioned, and 5,391 were released, or 71 percent. In Washington, D.C., customs agents seized 8,688 "criminal aliens" and freed 64 percent, or 5,558 of them, Breitbart reported.

"These findings raise further alarm over the Obama administration’s pending review of deportation practices, which reportedly may further expand the administration’s abuse of 'prosecutorial discretion,'" Vaughan said.

"Interior enforcement activity has already declined 40 percent since the imposition of 'prosecutorial discretion' policies in 2011. Rather than accelerating this decline, there is an urgent need to review and reverse the public safety and fiscal harm cause by the president’s policies."
