Hmm....Lowest Gun Violence in 20 years....

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-c...443441?SThisFB

Too bad a US media outlet wont report this:

Gun homicides in the United States have fallen sharply since peaking in 1993, two studies have found.

The federal Bureau of Justice Statistics said firearms-related homicides had dropped to 11,101 in 2011 from 18,253 - a reduction of 39%.

Meanwhile, the Pew Research Center found gun homicides per 100,000 people fell to 3.6% in 2010 from 7% in 1993.

The figures were released three weeks after US senators rejected proposals to extend background checks on gun sales.

President Barack Obama has campaigned for tighter firearms laws after 26 people died in a school shooting in Connecticut in December.

    Held steady

Both reports found the rate of non-lethal crimes involving guns had also fallen significantly over that period.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics, an office of the justice department, found that non-fatal firearms crimes dropped by 69% from 1.5 million to 467,300 during the period under study.

However, the justice department study also suggested that the percentage of US homicides committed with a firearm had held steady at around 70% between 1993-2011.

Despite the drop, some 56% of Americans believe gun crime is higher than two decades ago and only 12% think it is lower, according to the Pew Reseach Center.

Pew also found that African Americans made up a disproportionate share of gun homicide victims - 55% in 2010, despite accounting for 13% of the overall population.

In 2010, white people were 25% of victims but 65% of the population, while Hispanics were 17% of victims and 16% of the population.

Well in the late '80s and early '90s there was the crack epidemic going on. It's been reported over and over that crime rates have fallen since then.

jkj, wow, you have an answer for everything... You should join The Socialist's administration in Washington... they have answers for eveything as well...

So what's your answer for all the gun deaths in the inner cities and The Socialist's home of Chicago? Is there still a crack epidemic going on, or are they just ****ing stupid people with no morals that go about killing each other because they had no nuclear family?

So guns don't cause crime and the real problem is government intervention in things like the War on Poverty and War on Drugs which have created black markets, gang territories to defend said markets, poverty stricken inner city neighborhoods who turn to said markets for money and many social and economic factors?

Thank you. We can now ignore all future gun control legislation and start repealing many of these draconian laws on the lawful citizenry.

That's so strange, I wonder what happened in 1993 to cause such a decline?

Just an FYI, I don't 100% know where I stand on this issue, but to act as if gun control has no effect and then to base your numbers off of the start of one of the landmark cases in favor of gun control is very funny to me.

I don't have all the answers but saying that the fall in violent crime over the last 20 years hasn't been reported is either a lie or ignorance.

New York Times has great archives. There's a bunch of relevant articles here.

I'm not sure why you assume I would disagree with that statement.

And here you go from CNN.

    http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/08/us/stu...ide/index.html

    And USA Today.

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...worse/2139421/

    And NPR.

    http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/...993-study-says

Surely NBC wouldn't have reported it...

    Oops.

I guess none of these got the memo.

    Google is a helluva tool.

    Hmm...

Absolute coincidence. Crime is directly proportional to the economic health of the country. Look anywhere in the world. This country is 100 times better off than where it was heading in the late 70s.

I actually agree with you but please come back with this comment when others try to correlate loosening gun laws in certain jurisdictions with lower crime.

Both sides try to cherry pick time periods that supposedly prove their points but in reality the stats just shows a larger trend that can't be attributed to the cause they're arguing for.

Since I'm a loyal 2nd amendment supporter I couldn't give a **** less about cherry picked stats that support gun rights. Everyone has an agenda. You need to fight the agendas that are reducing liberty and removing constitutional rights.

Well I can tell you that I try to be fair about how I approach arguments. (Sometimes I succeed more than others.) If I think someone who agrees with my stance is misrepresenting data then I will call them out on it. When we're arguing over some statistical issue like this I'll often side with those I disagree with on the larger issue.

I'm not saying I don't have my own subconscious biases and that I'm not more likely to see the flaw in an opponent's logic. We all have those sort of biases. But when I notice things I try to call a spade a spade. If someone would have brought up the Brady Bill and the drop in violent crime I very likely (at least I hope) would have pointed out the societal changes since 1993 and the fact that the assault weapons ban ended quite a while ago.

I'm not here to win an argument. I'm here to give my opinions and try to add something to the arguments.

It should probably be pointed out that the guns that were banned in '93 make up for less than 2% of gun deaths before, during and after the ban.

    Carry on.
