    OU 45

    UT 0

Sooners ran the swinging gate, single wing and statue of liberty in the first half, plus hit em for a 53-yard td and finished with an INT returned for td.

Wouldn't you have loved to have been in the Cotton Bowl for that one?

And what do I have in common with three of the eighteen seniors who never lost a game?

Bud Wilkinson coached teams were years ahead of their opponent. They ran swing gate formations, statute of liberty plays, frequent halfback passes in addition to the basic option game and an occasional hurry up offense (ran three plays in 38 seconds in 1956 Orange Bowl).

Also in 1956 they outscored their opponents and average of 46.6 to 5.1 in ten games. They were not eligible for a bowl game in 1956 having appeared in the Orange Bowl following the 1955 season defeating 20-6. They also shutout 6 of their ten opponents.

In my opinion this team was the best OU team all time and I had the good fortune to see them play on Owen Field.

Well, as I wasn't alive back then, I missed that year

However, watching that makes me wish announcers were more like their earlier versions. I love watching old sporting events, the announcers were much more animated and sounded human.
