He announced today he is endorsing Mitt Romney, and that IF ROMNEY IS THE NOMINEE, then Trump says he WON'T RUN AS 3rd PARTY CANDIDATE!....how effing nice!

WHy not? The space race and the race to the moon was the biggest innovative thing this country had since WWII. Almost all of the technology you have in your house or on you is a result of the space program. We need big space programs for innovation and great technical leaps...

You bring up a point that gets missed by conservatives. Our most innovative periods have been the result of government spending in science and technology. These have been our two World Wars and the race to the moon.
Private industry has taken the innovations made during these periods, improved on them, brought them to the public, and made them affordable. This is the part where conservatives are right. However, they forget the first part - that government spending (especially wars) has changed societies in the 20th century.
Government can make investments that private industry would not be willing to make. Take the development of the jet aircraft. I don't think any airline or aircraft manafacturer would have put out the $$$ to invest in the R&D for it. Maybe 30 years ago it might have happened but nowadays if it doesn't pay off a handful of years private industries aren't touching it.

I remember seeing a History Channel or Science Channel or one of those channels doing a show on some of the stuff we were innovating when we were at war with the Japanese. The one that I remember was napalm bats. Basically, a chopper would release a special bat holding device (so that the bats would not be shot out too fast, lest they not survive the fall) during the day. The bats would then take refuge in Japanese huts in cities and villages (not made of brick of course). Then, after a half hour, the napalm would catch fire, igniting the entire village/city in an unexplainable manner.
The test run on it was apparently flawless. The massive (and apparently unexplainable) burninating that occurred from what were essentially bat bombs astounded leaders. However, by that time, the U.S. was planning to use a different type of bomb.
But... on a related topic, I think it's because times of war bring Americans together like none other. Even Dems are willing to love George W. Bush in times of crisis. I am willing to bet that if such an attack on America like 9/11 happened with Barack Obama as president, that even hard hearted Republicans would show Obama more support in a sign of solidarity.

We have a lot of intelligent posters from both sides of the political spectrum on this board. You are not one of them by any stretch.
I wouldn't go as far as you have here. Certainly gov't spending on military and the space race have brought about fantastic technological advances. Large undertakings like going to space can only be undertaken by governments. To say that the jet engine wouldn't have come about without gov't investment is a bit of a stretch. Obviously, the quest to win wars sped up the development of this technology.
But the industrial revolution wasn't brought about by gov't fiat. Electricity, the internal combustion engine, telephones, television, radio and on and on are not gov't inventions. Other gov't investments have been miserable failures, like the 30 years of DOE spending to develop "alternative" energy sources.
