I ate my black eyed peas today. My parents used to give my brother and I black eyed peas on New Year's Day. I still continue it though just for myself.
I ate mine!
Yes, but only after questioning teh wife about why we must partake in this pagan tradition.
"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves, in the course of time, a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it."

Black-eyed peas aren't so bad when dosed with a liberal amount of hot sauce. Or, as I discovered today, when mixed in with chili. Prolly the only time all yr I'll eat the things though. How do some traditions ever come into existence?
Oh and BEP's on mexi corn bread, a little queso on top. Pretty good stuff.
I would agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
Tradition here in Hawaii is Ahi, yellowfin tuna around $25 per pound.
And fireworks to chase away the evil spirits.

Skipped the BEP's today. I ate 'em in 2009 and I got cancer that year. I've continued to eat them for 2 more years and though I'm still alive, these have still been pretty "meh" years.
This year I decided, **** it, I'm going to take my chances.
Oh, yeah! This year it was 'Hoppin' John' only with Louisiana sausage and chipotle peppers to become 'Jumpin' Jehosephat!'. With cracklin' cornbread cooked in a cast iron skillet...and a rather nice bottle of Gruet sparkling wine to assist.
If I'd had a spliff the size of my forearm, life would have been just about perfect.

I passed on em this year. I ate em last year and 2011 wasn't the greatest.

Ate mine with cornbread and ham. And they were delish!
One explanation I have heard is that Black Eyed Peas in the ground were the only thing left after Sherman burned everything on his march to the sea.
I even brought some for the Yankee women in our office..........from Kansas. They never heard of it before, seems odd because they aren't that far away.
We had ours! Two of my daughters ate one bite each. The other couldn't seem to get enough of the bep's or the collard greens. Who knew?
Since 2011 was probably the worst year I've ever had, I've decided to kinda do the "opposite George" thing this year. Can't hurt.
Yes I did, too.
We celebrated Christmas on New Year's Day this year. Turkey, stuffing, roast beef, taters, etc. No BEPs - although I love them.
I had some left over BEP's for lunch today. Mmmmm
I would agree with you but then we'd both be wrong.
