Running on the presidential ballot is basically asking for people to discover and critique that you have gone by the name Barry Hussein Soretoro, or your teen unwed daughter is preggos, or that you're really old and would be four years older by the time you leave the Oval Office, or that you were arrested for DUI and maybe didn't fly planes or had your own personal guard while you served overseas at the order of your senate daddy, or that you had billions of affairs with women less pretty than your actual wife, or that you actually believe that you invented the Internet, or that you got a lot of political donations from cigarette companies, or that you raised taxes after saying "read my lips..." the list goes on.
If anyone's behind this, it's likely another conservative. It'd make a lot more sense for Perry or Romney to put something like this out at this point than the Democrats. Right now, the top three are vying for limited campaign support and cash and something like this whether true or false could derail a campaign.

I doubt Dems are that worried about Herman Cain right now. Their focus is likely on what they can do with Senate/Oval Office control till early 2013... or getting enough people re-elected to retain control (or possibly regain control of the House) past this upcoming 2012 election.
You may recall that the the Bush DUI thing didn't drop till weeks (or was it days?) before the 2000 election. Dropping crap like this Cain now wouldn't have any impact on the 2012 election. It would, however, have an impact on the early Republican primaries that are about two months away now.

Consider this: Cain's opponent is not Obama right now, nor is Obama the opponent of any other Republican candidate for president currently. His opponents in the current race are Rick Perry, Mitt Romney, etc.
You might say that the enemy of an enemy is a friend. Therefore, Democrats might consider doing what they can to help Romney and Perry in order for one of them to defeat Cain now, so that he will not face Obama later. Entirely possible.

We've already seen the fringe Loon Left go after Palin and Bachman inasmuch as they seem to think that the female vote is strictly theirs. As with the Black vote. Cain is on record saying he'll take at least a third of the black vote away from Obama. Loons think they own the "plantation." Then you have Rubio and the hispanic vote. The Loons are saying that he wasn't born in this Country and not qualified to be President.
It is almost too predictable.
The MO of the left is destruction any way they can think of for those R's that are actually or mostly conservative, or might pose a real problem for the socialist candidate of the day running in the democrat party. Then, they wait to get the weakest, least conservative, and consequently least inspiring to the R base into the nomination for the R's.
They don't terrorize the R candidate until it's time for max impact in the general election.
