Any one have a story or sighting? I am reading Hunter S. Thompsons book right now.

Lots. Pretty nice guys all-in-all.
Ralph "Sonny" Barger still made one of my favorite quotes: (paraphrased) "Nobody ever said freedom was cheap."
I've got lots of shirts from Frisco Choppers (West coast) and Sin City Cycles (East coast) that are HA shops.
I did a Google search, and it looks like most of the troublemakers are up in Canada.
In organized crime class we had a HA come in and talk about the 1 percenters and snuff films, some crazy shat.
one time back in the 70's(77 i think)Willie Nelson had his outdoor picnic(at the old speeday in tulsa)=keeping in mind, i was 9when this happened.
we were leaving to get to the track and ran into about 30 of them by Jack's cycle shop on Admiral....anyway
we got out at the track only to see this HUGE pile of garbage(looked to be about 20-30ft tall and 100-150ft
around.)
Some of the people sitting next to us said about half the crowd were wearing Hells Angels gear, and rowdy as hell...just trashing the place.
Then there was that thing out in Vegas with the Mongols(the rival bikers)they shot up one of the casino's.
weren't they at the Stones concert in Cali back in the late 60's-
free concert given at Altamont, a disused racetrack outside San Francisco. Poorly organised, and with on-site security provided by the Hell's Angels (at the suggestion of the Grateful Dead), the concert was a disaster, featuring running battles between fans and security which reached a head when Meredith Hunter, a young black fan who had unwisely brought a pistol (and a white girlfriend) to the show, was stabbed and beaten to death by the Angels during the band's performance of "Under My Thumb". (The concert would be documented in Albert and David Mayles' film Gimme Shelter).

but keeping in mind, that they are not all bad, I met this guy over at jacks cycles back years ago we talked for some time about gangs and such,
well he told me he was there at the speedway when that happened. and that
the majority of them were from out of town(not the local chapter)him and a bunch of his buddies stayed around to clean up the place so in the event there
would be another one of these kind of concerts that they would be allowed back.

that's a good one by HST. at that point, he was still writing books about something other than his own myth--and "gonzo" sort of meant something like a sociological, ethnographic approach to journalism--rather than outright fictions. Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail 72 is also a good one. while many on this board are not likely to share HST's dislike of Nixon, there are some pretty interesting insights into the political process-particularly the charlantry of the Democratic primaries....and politics in general, and of course in an increasing media age.
Hell's Angels is a good one.
I've read HSTs book. That's a really great book. They were a counterculture that didn't fit well into civil society. My impression is that they were like a wild animal - people find them interesting to be around but they're extremely dangerous. Once one decides he needs to pound you the whole group has to join in. It's part of the creedo.
I agree with you about F&L on the Campaign Trail KC. That provides an excellent perspective into presidential politics. Also, the Great Shark Hunt has a lot of his early writings which were really good. After the mid-70s I think he started to take himself too seriously and the acid had taken a toll.

Guess there's about eight fewer Bandidos now.
HA are ok. Bandido that is a different story don't mess with them.
Same is true of the Mongols. Here is a good book about them.Originally Posted by walkoffsooner

I knew some Bandidos.
One's nickname was "Scalper" because he had locks of hair from all the ladies he'd bedded down hanging on his wall.
These people were anti-social and lived like animals.
My first wife's first husband was one.
I was OK with all of them. I think they all knew I wasn't going to be much trouble. It wasn't long before the FBI hauled all of them away for manufacturing crystal meth.
The stories could go on and on. These guys lived in the absolute worst part of town. It looked like something out of a horror movie. I swear it did. This was in the early-mid 80's, and they'd sit around and actually talk about what a great president Reagan was.

I lived two blocks from their "clubhouse" when I lived in the E Village in NYC. I used to hang out at a bar on THEIR BLOCK. I met a couple and they seemed OK. Needless to say, that block -(3rd St btw 1st and 2nd Aves) is considered one of the safest in the city! Precinct blocks included. NOTHING happens without the Angel's say so.
SoonerinabileneOh sweet jesus. Its like watching the special olympics in high definition on here now.

OBAMA= One Big A** Mistake America!
In the early '80s I was involved in a case that we needed some information from a witness who was a "former" Hell's Angel living in Arkansas. I finally located him and sat at his kitchen table explaining who I was, who I represented and what I needed to know. He said he had nothing for me. I asked to use his phone to make a long distance call to report that he had nothing to tell us and said he could place it and have the operator call back with time and charges. I agreed to pay double whatever the call came to.
When he picked up the phone I handed him the business card with the desired phone number on the back. He looked at the number for a couple of seconds and asked who I was calling. I thumbed through my notes and told him it was a guy named Sonny Berger. (An obvious misstatement) He said are you sure it isnt Barger and I told him it could be, my hand writing was pretty bad. He hung up the phone and said What do you want to know. Very cooperative after that.
Several years before that a friend and I had stopped in a roadside tavern in Western Colorado and were quaffing a few when about 15 HAs came in the door. They were nice enough, but before we could leave we had a choice of getting beaten senseless or eating most of a syrofoam ice chest. That stuff doesnt taste to bad if you wash it down with lots of beer. They laughed and let us go.
Almost forgot. That shootout that was mentioned was in Laughlin, not Las Vegas.

This is why I like The South Oval.

I knew one of Sonny Barger's kids, he was older than me and a little guy he was really nice but he was really messed up emotionally and with drugs and alcohol.
