Even if it is a copycat of a copycat. Beer wins.

I have to disagree. There are thousands of hop bombs out there. Some are great, and some are just disgusting.

A properly done special bitter is a work of art. Anyone can dump a garbage bag full of Cascade hops into a brew.

Cascadia Dark Ale/BlackIPA on the other hand...

Not an ESB, but I love a good Imperial Stout, so hell yeah. Stouts and Porters are my favorites, but sometimes I want an easy drinking summertime beer.

Has anyone ever had an ESB from the cask across the pond?

Yes, did so in March, and it was terrible. But that was just one place...

What did you dislike about it? If not done properly it would be flat rather than lightly carbonated.

    Maybe dirty lines or contamination?

    Re: ESB

Probably the latter. It was skunky and thin. No mouthfeel (lol) and the flavors were muted because of some random wild yeast that got in there. It was very disappointing...

I've heard that, while not rampant, that is not an uncommon problem in British pubs.

On the bright side, you know what kind of beer our ancestors drank...and why they liked whisky.

Exactly! Plus, I had afternoon tea in Bath, and that made up for it. Now I know why they enjoy tea so damn much.

    Re: ESB

I do prefer the high gravity beers, 9% and above, from time to time. That's why I'll go for the stout over the ESB.

This is a kind of fun one too: http://www.shmaltz.com/HEBREW/j14.html 14% ABV.

I read somewhere that someone just made a beer that is 60% alcohol. That's a 120 proof beer my friends!!!

I'd like to try a 60% beer to say I did, but I have my doubts about it being good. It would have to be awfully thin. I can't imagine how much malted barley would be needed to have any character.

I'm with you though, I drink high gravity beers like a session beer.

I think the way they do that is that they freeze it, then shave off the ice so there is a beer concentrate. Because most yeasts crap out at about 14-18%

    ESB is awesome.

I love IPAs and Imperial Stouts too but I like to have different styles on different nights. And I agree with Delhalew, some IPAs are just a big hop dump (thought most IPAs are great), fewer brewers try to produce the more subtle ESB.
