TV shows and movies that 'sucked'

I want you to pitch and defend a good TV show and movie that "sucked" according to critics, box office returns and ratings.

I rewatched Ninja Assassin by the Matrix brothers again this weekend and while it is bloody most of the time and the dialog isn't great, the movie did not suck. The visuals are awesome.

NP and I went to Speed Racer (also by the Matrix brothers) last year as a joke, because we knew it was getting panned and was getting poor returns, so we fully intended to just sit through it and giggle at how awful it was... and yes, it was indeed awful dialog, acting, etc., but again, a very cool visual experience and we didn't regret seeing it.

Go ahead - tell me why I should watch the alleged worst TV show or movie ever and ignore it's awful ratings, reviews and box office returns

The Happening. Not because it's a good movie. It's not. Not at all. I just think everyone should experience the worst movie ever made.

Isn't that where the evil plants try to kill everyone?

and the worst movie ever made was Blair Witch Project. The fact that it had such good returns from its initial investment was annoying... people saw it out of curiosity, and it SUCKED.

I have never seen such a violent reaction to a movie that I actually attended. I mean people were pissed coming out of that movie.

I kinda figured it was going to suck going in, so it didn't take me by that much of a surprise, but watching people's reactions was worth my entertainment dollar for that evening.

Not the worst ever, but a good example of why M. Night Sha-Na-Na should never get another job in Hollywood.

Even so, a movie that was universally panned of his - The Last Airbender - brought in $130 mil thus far. Dude is bankable, even if his work sucks, kind of like Angelina Jolie lately

Re: TV shows and movies that 'sucked'

This is actually difficult to answer for me since I am a bit of a movie snob, but I'll try.

There is an animated Dragonlance movie, Dragons of Autumn Twilight that was pretty universally panned for Kiefer Sutherland's voice acting and an unusual mix of CGI an traditional animation. I finally watched it the other night and I actually really liked it.

OTherwise it's hard since so few films are universally panned by critics. I liked Watchmen more than the critics. I liked Kick *** more than the Box Office totals said I should. I enjoyed The Mist more than the critics and more than audiences who rejected the dark ending. Lovely Bones was WAY better than the reviews said, though that may be since I didn't read the book like so many that hated it. W Delta Z was way better than the "torture porn" lable that it received. Every Kevin smith Film other than J&SBSB and Cop Out has more to offer than the critics had us believe.

Most other movies I'd put in this category over the years have eventually found an audience and forced critics to rethink their original negative reviews. Others I'd include weren't so much panned as they just weren't praised as much as they deserved.

TV shows are easier. The last 3 years have seen the cancellation of 3 of my favorite TV shows, all of which I thought were great: The Dead Zone, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and Legend of the Seeker. All great shows that kinda went against the grain as far as what "works" on TV and all 3 were better for it.

Notice how they are gradually reducing how much they include his name on advertising for that Devil movie coming out soon. At first it his name was way up top and out front on trailers, but after the audience sat riveted at comic con only to laugh when his name showed up they've been slowly pulling back.

130 is NOT good. Not when the budget was 150mm. By Hollywood's math, you have to bring in AT LEAST double your budget to do better than break even. Don't forget about all of the advertising that went into, which I would bet was well over 30mm.

And as for the Devil thingy, once you put the name to the movie, everything fits. Dude could make a crazy good promo, but the substance was lacking and everyone knows the formula.

Two bad movies that I've seen many times: Repo Man and Destiny Turns On The Radio.

Why do I like them? It's really hard to say. Both just had an overall vibe that cut through the crappy scripts for me. Oh, and both had Tracey Walter playing a creepy little dude. That's box office gold in my books.

Plus, Destiny had one of my all time favorite exchanges:

Nancy Travis: And stop grabbing your thing all the time.

Jim Belushi: It's my thing! It's within arm's reach. I'll grab it if I want!

I'm pretty sure that Repo Man was pretty popular with some critics back in the day.

You might very well be right. I'm probably just thinking of all the times my wife has called me a moron for liking it so much.

Repo Man is pretty widely acclaimed. I think.

Big Trouble in Little China is a much-overlooked amazing movie.
