A couple of the other forums that I am on split the politics out as a sub-forum of the main Off Topic section. On most of them any that develops into the typical political primordial ooze gets moved into the sub-forum.
A person went to bed with his shoes on. Took them both off while in bed, and quickly dropped one onto the floor. Then, he began to ask his dormroom buddies when he should nudge the other shoe off the edge. "We can't control our mice", said some. "They click by themselves?" asked others. Hope? Change? Yes, we can.
Put a lid on it! Kiss it goodbye. We gave it away, and apparently thought it made sense to do so.

Well, I did take the time to research. It wasn't exhaustive by any means, but it's something. I did a search of the SO "from the beginning" which took me back to 2006. I looked at 4 full pages of thread titles (not clicking on the actual threads) and from what I could tell, we had 3 or 4 political threads...roughly one per page.
Now, in all fairness, there aren't a whole heap of political threads on the first four pages of the SO right now either. But it certainly isn't 5-1 "anti-W" over "anti-O". Now maybe if we look at the last year of W's presidency we'll see that magical number you speak of, but I'm skeptical.
It could just be that you happened to like W, so you noticed it then.
