How has Spurrier become such a mediocre coach?

Its not like he doesnt have talent, the guy has recruited a top 25 class each yr at SC. He is now 35-28 at south carolina, I dont get it...I realize SC isnt a powerhouse but the guy is a good coach.

I keep thinking he will have a breakout yr and it hasnt happened yet, now im not so sure it will.

With a record of 109-23 (.826) and six Big 12 championships in 10 seasons, Stoops has reason to be arrogant. But he is not. He is somewhere between humble and unimpressed.

Re: How has Spurrier become such a mediocre coach?

I started wondering the same thing awhile back. I assumed he'd get some great QB talent and grow it from there, but I've never been impressed by any of them while he's been at SC.
"Texas is no closer to being a strong, physical team than it was before Mack’s proclamation he wanted to out-SEC his Big 12 opponents. OU owned both lines of scrimmage and, well, everything else. Texas remains a finesse team."

Maybe he hasn't found any assistants that can get the team over the hump. Not sure what the problem is.

I wonder how focused he is. When he was at Florida, there were times when he seemed like he was about to blow a vein out through his forehead when something didn't go the way he thought it should have; even when his team was up by 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter. I've never seen him that animated or emotional on the SC sideline. Maybe he's mellowed out to the point of relative (for him) mediocrity.

He has top 25 recruiting classes, but what do the teams beating him regularly have? That would be interesting to see.

I think South Carolina must have offended the gods at some point and is under some kind of curse.

It has been, for decades, the place championship-level coaches go and end up producing mediocrity. Steve Spurrier and Lou Holtz are just the two most recent ones.

Maybe its all that bad karma still floating around from the time SC started the Civil War or something.

I think he's mellowed and doesn't have the desire he used to have. Maybe something happened to him while he was with the Redskins and he lost his mojo.

Recruiting and location has a lot to do with it. Having lived in Columbia, SC, I can say that their fanbase does love their football, but they aren't as passionate about it as fans of some of their neighbors- particularly UGA and Clemson. With UNC now getting better in football, it will only hurt them more, as they will steal a good number of recruits from Cocky. One thing's for darn sure, somebody from that side of the conference needs to step up and humble FLA, I don't care who it is.

    3 Reasons:

    1. talent
    2. talent

He's going up against teams getting top 10 talent.

Re: How has Spurrier become such a mediocre coach?

Yeah, but on paper talent ain't all of it. Remember in the early 2000's when Mack was getting all the 5 star recruits (Crissy Sims, et al) and OU wasn't to the same degree and OU beat them 5 years in a row. The big knock on Mack was that he was a great recruiter of superb talent, but couldn't maximize the results on the field--largely underachieving teams for the Longhorns in those days. Here in Texas, they were yowling for Mack's head on a platter.

Also, the knock on Texas later became they recruited unsavory characters as indicated by the rash of arrests a few years back.

Seems Mack has cleaned all that up. He's learned from Stoops not put up with any off field chicanery from recruits/players no matter how good they are. Note this week's departure of receiver Dan Buckner after off field problems & entanglement with the law.

Also, he's surrounded himself with a pretty good coaching staff. Mack probably needs that, as I'm really not sure he's all that adept a football technician. He is still a good recruiter, media man, and cheeleader, though. Texas is paying a lot for those skills, but hey, it is what it is & results speak.

You would think by now, Spurrier would have accidentally got a good QB. He is Spurrier. Even if he is just coasting, he should get better results than he is.

I don't think Spurrie has become a mediocre coach so much as he is simply running a second rate football program.I think it would be a lot like what would happen if Stoops went to Iowa State.Without tradition, facilities, resources winning is hard.Especially difficult competing against Clrmson,Georgia,N.C.,N.C. State,,Wake Forest in their area and conference.I would point out that Holtz in spite of sucess at Arkansas and ND did not set the world on fire at the OTHER USC either.

    Switzer '73-'88 157-29-4 .837(DYNASTY 2) 3 NC
Stoops '99- PRESENT 179-46.793 (DYNASTY 3) 1 NC and still WAITING

At OU tradition is about more than just one coach 861-319-53 .720

Re: How has Spurrier become such a mediocre coach?

I checked the records for comparison sake.Holtz was 33-37 and Spurrier is currently 35-28.I honestly thought Holtz did better than that,I think it DOES help prove how tough it is to win at South Carolina.

Just for perspictive I looked up the overall record of the Gamecock program, they are 535-535-44.a dead even .500 program.Their wiiningest coach had a career record of 64-69-7.

^^^^ THIS. Plus, he's not able to get the Florida recruits to come to Carolina as easily as he could when he was head coach at UF.
