Penn St. receiver kicked off team after DUI charge

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—Penn State backup receiver James McDonald is off the football team after police charged him with drunken driving.

A one-sentence statement Tuesday from the athletic department said the fifth-year senior would not be invited back to the Nittany Lions this fall. The statement did not elaborate.

State College police on Monday filed two misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence against McDonald after he was pulled over July 9 for an expired registration.

The 22-year-old from Washington, D.C., also faces a violation of driving a car with an expired registration. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 19.

McDonald has played sparingly at Penn State, finishing last season with five catches for 72 yards.

Maybe coach Paterno has the right idea. Now if only they could instill the same attitude towards cell phone use while driving . . .

I think they can find someone else to catch five passes.

Fifth year, and still a backup. That has a lot to do with the dismissal.

Maybe the dude wasn't that talented on the field, or perhaps, the fact that he was in his fifth year and still not contributing much to the team meant he was a bad apple - didn't try, didn't study film or the playbook, didn't practice very hard - just ate up a scholarship that could have gone to someone that would have actually done something with it other than take up space... and catch five passes, lol.

If you don't contribute to your team on the field, you better d@mn well contribute off the field, or you'll get the Hardison treatment the second you step into a casino.

Yeah, sent a big statement to a guy who never plays. Here in Columbus, players get DUI's all the time and start the next week. There should be some sort of rule across the board for all D I programs

it would never work, because they can't even get D1 programs across the board to be forced to interview minority coaching candidates a la the NFL's Rooney Rule. The NCAA continues to collect money, but would rather not enforce rules. It just needs money, plzkthx. Don't ask them to do any work that might upset its cash cows.

I agree. If the NCAA does nothing with USUC, I can't see them going this far.

Usc did the same thing that tO$U did when Tre$$el was under fire... Run the basketball coach out of town and punish the basketball program. The NCAA won't touch U$C
