I have to think it was the huge contract they gave him, I have heard he is a very sensitive guy so maybe after he struggled early on with San Fran he may not have been able to take the criticism.

This was a bad signing as soon as the ink dried. That ERA spike, the WHIP jumping and showing he was lucky later into his time as an A... He actually hasn't been the same since 2004. An average pitcher doesn't deserve the money Sabean threw at him. To top the numbers off there was evidence that he lost both his fastball and curveball before the signing.
