Re: CNBC Anchor calls for "NEW TEA PARTY"

Damn, listen to Putin talk at Davos....

    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1233...5243.html?mod=

True, the state's increased role in times of crisis is a natural reaction to market setbacks. Instead of streamlining market mechanisms, some are tempted to expand state economic intervention to the greatest possible extent.
The concentration of surplus assets in the hands of the state is a negative aspect of anti-crisis measures in virtually every nation.
In the 20th century, the Soviet Union made the state's role absolute. In the long run, this made the Soviet economy totally uncompetitive. This lesson cost us dearly. I am sure nobody wants to see it repeated.
Nor should we turn a blind eye to the fact that the spirit of free enterprise, including the principle of personal responsibility of businesspeople, investors and shareholders for their decisions, is being eroded in the last few months. There is no reason to believe that we can achieve better results by shifting responsibility onto the state.
Wonder why this didn't make the U.S. press until now?

Re: CNBC Anchor calls for "NEW TEA PARTY"

Allow me to just throw this out there: I have a personal acquaintance who started a school to educate Christian preachers in Moscow. He says the best friend they have is Putin. He also says the western press gets it real screwy about the man.

Now, I admit that Vlad drives me crazy too, what with his apparent desire to hold power in Russia. And it's hard for me to see what my friend sees in him...but maybe I don't see it all. Maybe this Davos speech is more indicative of the man. It's sure crazy having a former "KGB thug" pleaing with the U.S. not to follow the socialist agenda....

Heh, American apologists for a Communist dissent informant turned dictator because of a democratically elected president and Congress enacting a package through democratic means. Politics makes strange bedfellows, indeed.

I noticed you did a bit of cherry picking for Putin's speech as well, what are his views on income disparity? Regulation? I also find the criticism of American investment banks somewhat odd, considering the BILLIONS that they provided to Russia quite cheaply. He wants to shift the nation of reserve currency, I'll give you a guess as to who has the world's lionshare of reserve currency. Putin is no saint or person to take advice from. It seems you people would have learned the last time one of your ilk looked into his soul and saw a decent man.

You'd be silly to think Putin cares about anything other than increasing the power of the Russian state...he is no fool and knows his raison d’être.

You do realize the progressive tax bracket doesn't allow for a punitive amount?

Each bracket is assigned a percentage, so if you have an AGI of 100k, you're in the 28% bracket, but your effective tax rate is 22%. Only 1% of Americans even qualify to be in the highest bracket, and it's hella more than 100k.

You're right. I learned on Rush Limbaugh today that 40,000 people pay 50% of the taxes that support NYC.

    That's amazing.

Out of what? 8 million people? Hey, if the rich man wants to pay for a free ride, I might as well stay in the plains.

PS- I don't want to pay my mortgage, either.

bah! All of this arguing is counter-productive and unhealthy for our "democracy." I've learned it accomplishes nothing. You're standing in the way of progress, comrade.

I do know one thing, though. In a few years, everyone is going to understand what the definition of 'moral hazard' is.

That would be a bit disingenuous on the part of Rush. NYC has a city form that is filed with state taxes (so if you live in NYC you file a Fed, state, and city returns), what Rush has seemed to imply is that 40,000 pay for the support of NYC, which leaves out Corp, gift, estate, sales, fiduciary taxes which I would imagine are filed by quite a bit more than 40,000 people. Not to mention federal funds that are funneled to NYC, or the surrounding states that have a vested interest in the city, or the massive amount of foreign investment into the city.

On top of that the logic is flawed from the beginning and raises a false dichotomy, taxes are levied on assets and income, not on people. It would take a fundamentally aristocratic shift to switch the tax burden per capita as opposed to revenue, which would mean the vast majority of Americans would see their taxes raised while the vast majority of the rich would have them drop, it's a fiscal equivalent to feudalism.

The moral of the story is that if you get an offer for a 100k+ job, don't let taxes be the determining factor as you will make more money than at a 40k job, or a 99k job for that matter.

It was actually Mayor Bloomberg who said it. Rush reported it.

I think I'll settle for being a lower middle class bum, because like I said, I can't find a job that pays over 100k that let's me stay near momma...and I get very homesick. I came very close to moving to Wyoming to take one...then the oilfield crashed.

Maybe Israel will nuke Iran and teh price will go up and I can move to the Rocky Mountains. There are millions of prairie dogs up there. Millions!

eta- actually the prairie dogs are in eastern Wyoming which kind of resembles the OK panhandle. Hey, one man's wasteland is another's paradise.

You ever been to Hooker, OK?
