What did you do during this Great Depression during our generation / century?

What are you Soonerfan peeps doing this weekend?

I have to write yet another gloom and doom economic report this weekend.

I also discovered yesterday that I own more than 15,000 company warrants that are due to expire and have virtually no value. So much for Wall Street types cashing in.

But, I'm also doing my part.

Nope thinks his jeans are too tight and wants a new set of clothes. Trust me, he will pick out the tightest pair of jeans he can find and I am not going to say anything, except "do you take credit card?".

    Vanity: his and his.

But, the economic crisis hits close to home. I have laid off one employee this week and I feel good.

What are you doing this weekend to support the economy?

I just upped my bi-weekly contribution to the Thrift Savings Plan by another percent (G-fund baby, never negative and still averaging about 5.5%), and rolling up another roll of Benjamins for the mason jar.

I'll be burning a big-assed brush pile to try to warm the earth up, and I'll be loading a bunch of hay onto a trailer for some horse people.

My brother laid off 22 employees yesterday in Denver. He feels like hammered **** about it.

    Lets see

I worked extra hours last weeked, will work most of this weekend (not by choice).

Dropped some coin on a couple games at Best Buy yesterday. When I get to the job site, I'll go to the gym on monday and pay day rates for the week.

I did do a nice transfer to savings though

Thankfully we aren't anywhere near a depression.

But its always a good idea to have a good emergency fund going.

I'm moving in some furniture, making a trip to Omaha to handle some stuff, taking a woman out for dinner, going to church and having dinner with my Grandma, hopefully signing up a new client, looking at some cows, and likely watching the Super Bowl at the end.

i have a doomsday backpack with saltine crackers, several jars of peanut butter, about 400$ cash, a credit card, an 80 gig drive with my career on it, and bottled water.

of course i also live in a flood plain about 75 yards from the creek that will destroy me. they say we'll have about 25 minutes if the dam up in Nederland, Co breaks. and, before you laugh, google "Big Thompson flood".

I don't know if there is a depression-proof job, but according to an article I read last month, it's at least resistant. That said, I go to work every day and wonder about my 15 yr old twins future. My house and cars are paid off, that's something.

My Dad grew up during the Great Depression. His folks ran a cafe in Shawnee. He tells of men coming through town, riding the rails. They'd come to the back door, wanting to do any odd job for a meal. Grandma would always give them a bowl of stew with a thick piece of bread. Dad was 7-8 yrs old during the worst of it. He'll always remember the men eating like wolves, swabbing the last drop with the bread, then gulping that down.

God help us if we come to that again.

Re: What did you do during this Great Depression during our generation / century?

I'm gettin' drunk and conducting important Posse bidness.

As for the economy, I got news of a 36% pay cut Tuesday due to the stumbling Vegas economy combined with the ridiculous rent we pay on the building we're based in and the dumazz landlord refusing to work with us despite at least 50 totally empty retail spaces within a few blocks.

Youth sports leagues make up a huge portion of our business and unfortunately with unemployment heading toward 10% statewide and seemingly higher in Vegas/Henderson combined with the number of people also taking paycuts or settling for crap jobs at crap pay after losing their previous job people aren't able to put their kids in the leagues. Our corporate business is down as Casinos etc. keep cutting their budgets and eliminating employee awards like employee of the month etc.

This is on top of us losing virtually every Real Estate and Construction customer we have due to either budget cuts or businesses closing.

The "regular people" who normally come in just don't want to spend the money on engraved gifts or even memorials to lost relatives.

Overall it's hitting us pretty hard.

I'm glad I have a job, but it would be nice if everything picked up so I could actually make what I'm supposed to make. I guess its better than friggin' unemployment, welfare, or stealin' stuff though!
