Best alternative software to the "big guys"

Alright gang, I'm cheap! I like stuff for free. I know there is a lot of freeware out there that is compareable to other big name software. Please give your opinion on software that you have tried that is either free or very cheap, and is almost as good as the name brand software. I'll go first:

    Spybot Search and Destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/ (this runs really well and gets a lot of crap off your computer!)

Mozilla: Thunderbird and Firebird both are good.

Open Office for word processing and spreadsheeting is pretty good too.

In addition to SB-S&D, I usually run Ad-Aware since there's always a bit of overlap.

yes, apparently I was very interested in the Houston Rockets at one point, and I had some very strong things to say about Bill Walton.

    Dude.

Subject: Re: is REVEAL Inc. a bogus company?

Well, this might explain it! I bought a Reveal WaveXtreme 32 sound card that
wouldn't work with any of my dos games. After weeks of trying to contact
Reveal with no success, I tried to take the card back to Best Buy. The
manager refused to take it back even when I threw a **** fit - I even called
the corporate office. The funny thing is that the check out lady at the
return desk said that she had heard Reveal went out of business. Well,
needless to say I will now never buy a Reveal product NOR step foot into Best
Buy. Both companies could care less about their customers.

Just my $.02 (damn, that felt good).

I can't believe I saw that. The funniest part of the whole post is the "damn, that felt good". It was sorta like some light bulb turned on and I said "HEY! I can use the internet to BITCH about stuff! I need to do this more often!"

    And the rest is history.
