I've gotten up to about 2800.
the trick that helps me is to heep the guy on the screen. You can take a big swing and pick up a bunch of distance quick, but it's almost impossible to catch your guy on the way back down.
Yup-keep your trajectory flat as possible. That's what's helped me.
