For the Week of October 1, 2007

No. 8 SOONERS SPLIT WITH No. 10 LINDENWOOD

    OKLAHOMA OFF THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (3-1-0) has this weekend off to participate in the OU/Texas weekend festivities in Dallas.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma went on the road last weekend and split a pair of games with No. 10 Lindenwood (2-2-0) in Wentzville, MO. On Friday night, the Sooners received a pair of goals from forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX), single goals from Greg Curtiss (Flint, MI) and Jarrod Yost (Murphy, TX) and a goal via penalty shot from Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) on their way to a 5-3 win over the Lions. Goaltender Rob Mattison (Bartlesville, OK) stopped 30 of 33 shots to earn the win. Saturday night was indeed alright for fighting as six Sooners were tossed from the game for fighting after a line brawl started on the ice early in the second period of the following game. Lindenwood won the game by a score of 5-2 but penalties dominated the game. OU racked up 164 minutes in penalties on the evening while Lindenwood accumulated 136 of their own for a total of 300 minutes in penalties between the two teams. Scoring goals for OU on Saturday were forwards Keith Denton (Vail, CO) and Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ). Mattison took the loss after replacing starting goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN) who was ejected for taking part in the second period melee. Lindenwood is historically always a tough opponent but the weekend's penalty-fest ought to make things interesting when the Lions travel to Oklahoma City in November for a pair of games against the Sooners.

TEAM CAPTAINS ANNOUNCED – Defenseman Mark Tylka (Wisconsin Dells, WI) has been named captain of the 2007-2008 Sooners. Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) and defensemen Trey Snow (Coppell, TX) and Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) were named alternate captains.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are ranked 8th in the 2007-2008 pre-season ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The next ranking is scheduled to be released this weekend.

SOONERS HOME GAMES ON THE AIR – All University of Oklahoma® Hockey home games this season will be broadcast on The WIRE. Fans can listen to Sooners Hockey home games via the Internet (www.icehockey.ou.edu, www.ouhockey.com or http://wire.ou.edu), Cox Cable Television Channel 4 SAP in Norman or 1710 AM in the immediate vicinity of the OU campus. OU Hockey broadcasts begin 15 minutes prior to face-off.

TICKETS – Individual tickets for upcoming OU Hockey home games are on sale now. In addition, a limited number of 2007-2008 season tickets are also available. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 South I-35, in Oklahoma City. Call 631-3307 or 631-2709 for additional information.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE – The Sooners practice this week at the Blazers Ice Centre on Tuesday from 8:45-10:30 P.M., Wednesday from 4:30-6:00 P.M. and also Sunday TBA in order to help the team recover from the weekend festivities in Dallas.

For the Week of October 8, 2007

No. 7 SOONERS FACE WEBER STATE ON THE ROAD

OKLAHOMA TRAVELS TO OGDEN, UTAH THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - After a week off due to the OU/Texas football weekend, the University of Oklahoma® hockey club (3-1-0) gets back to business this week with a pair of games against Weber State University (3-1-0) in Ogden, Utah. The Sooners have a 5-3-2 all-time record against the Wildcats and a 2-1-1 record against Weber State in games played at the Weber County Ice Sheet. Last season, the Sooners were 3-1-0 against Weber State, winning both games played in Ogden and splitting a pair of games in Oklahoma City.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma's last games were two weeks ago when the Sooners split a pair of games with then-No. 10 Lindenwood in Wentzville, MO, winning the first game on Friday 5-3 and losing a penalty-filled contest on Saturday by a score of 5-2.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are ranked 7th in the latest ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking released this past Friday. Here are the complete rankings:

    24 Robert Morris (IL) 0-2-0 110 19
    25 Duquesne 1-1-0 90 21

Others receiving votes: Arizona, Mercyhurst, Youngstown State, Stony Brook, Rutgers, Indiana (PA), Saint Louis, Towson, and Drexel.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS – The Weber State squad has endured some trying times recently. After the first game last season between OU and Weber State in Ogden, a 9-3 victory for OU, the Wildcats parted ways with their Head Coach, Joe Pfleegor. Former Weber State player Zak Treasure stepped in to take over the coaching reins for the remainder of the season. This season, Treasure serves as co-head coach with Aaron Dufford, a former Wildcat defenseman. Weber State disbanded its D2 club over the summer and the D1 club was forced to deal with some internal university audit issues before being allowed to play this season. On the ice, Weber State started out shaky with a 3-2 road loss to arch rival Utah State (ACHA D2) but have since followed that up with three wins, a 4-2 win over Utah State and 12-1 and 18-3 thrashings of Utah (ACHA D2). Forwards Michael Spawton, Chris Cotsilis and Nick Micek lead the Wildcats attack while defensemen Devon Benike and Scott Lam hold down the Weber State blueline. Goaltender Kyle Gover, back for another season between the pipes for Weber State, had a 3.76 goals against average last season and always seems to play well against the Sooners.

AFTER FURTHER REVIEW – In Oklahoma's last game, the 5-2 loss at Lindenwood, seven different Sooners were ejected from the game and received game disqualification penalties, mostly as a result of a 6-on-6 line brawl in the second period. In college hockey, a game disqualification penalty not only ejects the player from that game, but it also disqualifies the player for the next regularly scheduled game. The end result for OU was that the seven players who received Game DQs could not dress for the first game at Weber State. However, Lindenwood's referee-in-chief reviewed the game last week and rescinded the Game DQs for Keith Denton (Vail, CO) and Ryan Kenny (Scottsdale, AZ), meaning that both players are immediately eligible to play this weekend. The Game DQ penalties to Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason (Woodbury, MN), forward Greg Smith (Irvine, CA), forward Chris Nicolaou (Dallas, TX) and defenseman Daryl Dee (Garland, TX) were upheld and all four players cannot play in the first game at Weber State as a result. Defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) was assessed an additional Game DQ by Lindenwood's referee-in-chief for his role in the melee. Miller must sit out three games as a result, including this weekend's series at Weber State, and will not be eligible to play for the Sooners until OU's home game against Arizona State on October 20th.

ON THE SIDELINE – Hard-hitting defenseman Trevor Hallberg (Flagstaff, AZ) injured his knee in practice recently, tearing both his ACL and MCL. Dr. Dan J. Jones and the excellent team of healthcare professionals at Southwest Orthopaedic & Reconstructive Specialists in Oklahoma City are overseeing Hallberg's injury and rehabilitation. Under the supervision of Dr. Jones and the great staff at SOS, Hallberg will have surgery in the coming weeks to repair the damage. Hallberg, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering and a key part of the Sooners defensive corps, will be out for the remainder of the season.

TICKETS – Individual tickets for all OU Hockey home games are on sale now. In addition, a limited number of 2007-2008 season tickets are also available. Individual and season tickets can be purchased at Blazers Ice Centre, 8000 South I-35, in Oklahoma City. Call 631-3307 or 631-2709 for additional information.

PRACTICE SCHEDULE – The Sooners practice this week at the Blazers Ice Centre on Monday and Wednesday from 4:30-6:00 P.M. and Tuesday from 8:45-10:30 P.M. before leaving for Utah early Friday morning.

Re: ***THE OFFICIAL OU HOCKEY THREAD***

    OKLAHOMA 5, WEBER STATE 1

The 7th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club had to shake off some travel legs early before finding its scoring groove on the way to a 5-1 win over Weber State Friday night in Ogden, Utah. Five Sooners were suspended for tonight's game as a result of game disqualification penalties received two weeks ago at Lindenwood. Three of those players did not make the trip to Utah while the remaining two traveled to Weber State, leaving OU with nineteen players tonight instead of the usual twenty-one that can suit up for ACHA games.

There were no goals scored in the first period as the Oklahoma players struggled to shake off the effects of early morning air travel to Utah. However, no scoring did not mean there were no scoring chances. Despite being undermanned by two players, Oklahoma had 20 shots on goal in the period, compared to Weber State's lonely two shots during the same time, and Oklahoma had four power plays in the stanza while Weber State had three chances to score with the man advantage in the first twenty minutes of play.

In the second period, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) started the Oklahoma scoring with a goal at the 2:31 mark to give the Sooners a 1-0 lead. Forward Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) scored the eventual game-winner at 5:32 to give OU a two goal cushion. In the third period, Weber State scored on a power play to cut the Oklahoma lead in half. But Siira scored his second goal at 8:28 of the third period and Allan followed suit with his second tally of the evening, a power play goal at 13:06, to put the Sooners up by a comfortable 4-1 margin. Forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) topped off the Oklahoma scoring with a goal at 17:27 to make tonight's final score 5-1 in favor of the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Rob Mattison stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced from the Wildcats while his Weber State counterpart, Kyle Gover, stopped 44 of 49 shots. Oklahoma was 1 for 6 on the power play while Weber State was 1 for 8 with the man advantage.

With the win, the Sooners improve to 4-1-0 on the season while Weber State drops to 3-2-0. Oklahoma stays in Ogden to face Weber State again Saturday evening.

    2007-08 RECORDS:

    Oklahoma: 4-1-0 ACHA Division I

Weber State: 3-2-0 ACHA Division I

COACHES: Oklahoma – Larry Donovan; Weber State – Zak Treasure & Aaron Dufford

SETTING THE STAGE: Tonight is the second of two games between Oklahoma and Weber State this weekend...OU beat Weber State last night by a score of 5-1...Oklahoma now has a 6-3-2 all-time record against Weber State, including a 3-1-1 road record against the Wildcats in Ogden.

OKLAHOMA NOTES: Forwards Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) and Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) scored two goals each last night in the Sooners' 5-1 victory...Forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) added a goal of his own last night...Goaltender Rob Mattison (Bartlesville, OK) stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced yesterday to improve his record to 3-1-0...After sitting out last night's game due to game DQ penalties, defenseman Daryl Dee (Garland, TX) and forward Chris Nicolaou (Dallas, TX) will be back in the Sooners line-up tonight...OU was 1 for 6 on the power play yesterday...The Sooners have a balanced offensive attack, as evidenced by eight different Sooners scoring points last night and six different Sooners having three or more goals each through five games this season.

WEBER STATE NOTES: Weber State's lone goal last night was scored by defenseman Scott Lam...Feisty forward Nick Micek didn't make the scoring column yesterday but was assessed three minors as he re-introduced himself to some of his favorite Sooners...Goaltender Kyle Gover must have seen pucks in his sleep last night after the Sooners pelted him with 49 official shots on goal...Unofficially, the Sooners had at least 10 more that were "missed" by the WSU official scorer...Weber State plays on an Olympic-sized sheet of ice (200' x 100' as opposed to a traditional 200' x 85' NHL-sized sheet) but could not take advantage of their home rink last night, partly due to Oklahoma's preparation in practice this past week which focused on spreading OU's offensive attack and tightening the defensive zone coverage to account for the extra space on the Weber State ice.

NEXT UP FOR THE SOONERS: The Sooners return home to face No. 23 Arizona State next weekend…For more information, please call (405) 631-3307.

Re: ***THE OFFICIAL OU HOCKEY THREAD***

    OKLAHOMA 6, WEBER STATE 0

The 7th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club earned its first shutout of the season Saturday night as it humbled Weber State 6-0 in Ogden, Utah. Forward Luke Rose (Norman, OK) got the scoring started with a goal at the 9:11 mark of the first period to give OU a 1-0 lead. After Rose's goal, which turned out to be the game-winner, the Sooners turned on the power play offense, scoring five goals on the man advantage through the rest of the game. Defenseman Blake Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK) scored on the power play at 11:30 of the first to make the score 2-0. Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) scored his third goal of the weekend with a power play tally just 58 seconds into the second period to put the Sooners up by 3 goals. Forward Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) also scored his third marker of this road trip, again on the power play, at the 9:28 mark of the second period to make it a four goal lead for Oklahoma. Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK), playing in his first games of the season this weekend since he was injured at Nationals in March, scored at 11:26 of the second period to give the Sooners an insurmountable 5-0 lead. Defenseman Daryl Dee (Garland, TX) topped off the OU scoring with an unassisted power play goal in the third period to make tonight's final score 6-0 in favor of the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Rob Mattison stopped all 23 shots he faced tonight, earning his first shutout since his high school hockey days. Weber State's goalie, Kyle Gover, was outstanding in net for the Wildcats as he stopped 59 of the 65 shots the Sooners threw his way, preventing what easily could have been a bigger Sooners blowout and limiting OU to just six goals. Oklahoma was 5 for 13 on the power play while Weber State was 0 for 8 with the man advantage.

The Sooners are now 5-1-0 on the season while Weber State sinks to .500 at 3-3-0. Oklahoma returns home to host No. 23 Arizona State next weekend.

For the Week of October 15, 2007

SOONERS WIN TWO AT WEBER STATE

No. 7 OKLAHOMA HOSTS No. 23 ARIZONA STATE THIS WEEKEND

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (5-1-0) will play its first home games in four weeks as they host the Arizona State Sun Devils (1-3-0) for games on Friday and Saturday evening. The Sooners have a 4-4-0 all-time record against the Sun Devils and a 2-2-0 record against ASU in games played at the Blazers Ice Center. Last season, the Sooners went undefeated against Arizona State, winning all four games the teams played against one another.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma returns from a road swing to Utah this past weekend where the Sooners swept two games from Weber State. Friday night, Sooners forwards Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) and Daniel Siira (Anchorage, AK) powered the Oklahoma offense with two goals apiece as the Sooners beat Weber State 5-1. Saturday evening, goaltender Rob Mattison (Bartlesville, OK) turned away all 23 shots he faced and the Sooners scored five power play goals as OU cruised to its first shutout of the season, beating Weber State by a score of 6-0.

RANKINGS – The Sooners are ranked 7th in the latest ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The next ranking is scheduled to be released this Friday.

SCOUTING THE SUN DEVILS – Arizona State has stumbled out of the gate this season. Right now, they are ranked 23rd in the latest D1 ranking but with a 1-3-0 record, look for ASU to drop further or even out of this Friday's upcoming ranking. The Sun Devils lost their first game of the season at Cal State-Long Beach (ACHA D2) by a score of 3-2. ASU's lone victory this season came the next night when they beat the 49ers 3-2 in a shootout, winning the shootout 1-0. ASU followed that effort with a pair of home losses to archrival Arizona two weeks ago by scores of 3-1 and 8-5. Forwards Patrick Lind (1G-3A-4pts), Ryan Clark (2-1-3), Trevor Van Conant (1-2-3) and defenseman Tony Bonacorso (1-2-3) are ASU's leading scorers so far this season. Sun Devils goaltender Kyle Bronsteen has a 3.18 goals against average through four games this season.

SIMPLY THE BEST – With the victories this past weekend, Head Coach Larry Donovan is now the winningest coach in OU Hockey history. Donovan entered this season needing four wins to eclipse former coach Craig Mcalister's 48-18-4 record. Six games and five wins later, Coach Donovan's record now sits at 50-15-1 and counting.

Thank you for your continued support and interest in OU Hockey!

Re: ***THE OFFICIAL OU HOCKEY THREAD***

    OKLAHOMA 5, ARIZONA STATE 2

What appeared at first to be an easy evening for the 7th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club was anything but as the Sooners had to stage a third period offensive flurry to secure a 5-2 win over unranked Arizona State Friday night in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma's leading goal scorer, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ), scored just 34 seconds into the game on a rising shot from the point that sailed over the ASU goalie into the net to give OU a quick 1-0 lead. The Sooners struck again when forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) scored at 10:32 of the first period to make the score 2-0 in OU's favor and it appeared as if the Sooners were going to roll over the Sun Devils. Arizona State had other ideas though as they connected on a power play goal late in the first period to cut the OU lead in half.

Less than a minute into the second period, ASU had tied the game at 2 with another power play tally. The Sooners successfully killed off a 1:50 5-on-3 ASU power play in the second to keep the score knotted at 2-2 after two periods of play. However, the Sooners' conditioning paid off in the final stanza as OU continued to skate at a torrid pace while ASU looked noticeably tired during the final twenty minutes of the game.

Oklahoma took the lead for good at 3:14 of the third period when Allan scored his second goal of the night, this one coming while the teams were playing four-on-four hockey. Allan and defenseman Blake Johnson (Oklahoma City, OK) raced into the ASU zone on a 2-on-1 and, after receiving a sweet crossing pass from Johnson, Allan buried the puck into the ASU net to give OU a 3-2 lead. Forward Chris Nicolaou (Dallas, TX) scored OU's first power play goal of the night less than a minute later to put the Sooners up 4-2. Brewer added his second goal of the evening on another power play with 8:31 to go in the game to make the final score 5-2 in favor of the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Rob Mattison stopped 26 of 28 shots he faced tonight. Arizona State's goalie, David Tanner, ended up stopping 39 of the 44 Oklahoma shots he saw during the evening. Oklahoma was 2 for 9 on the power play while ASU was 2 for 11 with the man advantage.

The Sooners are now 6-1-0 on the season while Arizona State's record falls to 1-4-0. The two teams meet again Saturday night at 6:30 P.M. at the Blazers Ice Centre.

    OKLAHOMA 6, ARIZONA STATE 2

The 7th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club sandwiched two terrific periods of hockey around a lackluster middle period, scoring six power play goals along the way, as they beat a tired club from Arizona State by a score of 6-2 Saturday night in Oklahoma City.

Forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) put the Sooners on the scoreboard first with a goal at 5:59 of the first period to give OU an early 1-0 lead. Defenseman Shawn Hayden (Allen, TX) slipped a shot from the point into the corner of the ASU net at 15:07 of the first to make the score 2-0 in OU's favor. Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) banged home a rebound at 18:18 to send the Sooners off at the first intermission up 3-0.

In the second period, the Sooners lost their intensity and composure which allowed the Sun Devils to get back into the contest. Ten of the fourteen penalties called in the middle stanza were assessed against the Sooners. ASU made the most of their man advantage opportunities by scoring two goals, one at even strength but immediately after a power play had just expired and the other on the power play, to cut the Sooners' lead to one after 40 minutes of play.

Just like the night before, the Sooners came out focused in the third period and scored three goals to salt the game away. Defenseman Daryl Dee (Garland, TX) scored an unassisted goal at 5:41 to give OU a two goal cushion over ASU. Forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) scored his 9th goal of the season at 8:03 and Brewer added a bookend goal at 14:32 to make tonight's final 6-2 in favor of the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Chad Helgason stopped 25 of 27 shots he faced tonight. Arizona State's Kyle Bronsteen stopped 28 of the 34 shots he saw tonight. Oklahoma was an incredible 6 for 13 on the power play while the Sooners' penalty kill unit held ASU to only 1 power play goal in 12 opportunities.

The Sooners are now 6-1-0 on the season while Arizona State's record falls to 1-4-0. Oklahoma plays three games in three nights at home next week, starting with Adrian College on Thursday night followed by two games against the University of Missouri on Friday and Saturday.

THIS WEEK’S GAMES - The University of Oklahoma® hockey club (7-1-0) will play three home games in three nights this week for the first time in OU Hockey history. Thursday night will see ACHA newcomer Adrian College (1-5-0) come to town to face the Sooners at 7:30 P.M. This will be the first time that Oklahoma and the Bulldogs have met on the ice. After Adrian on Thursday night, the Sooners will host the Tigers from ACHA D2 University of Missouri (6-4-0) for games on Friday and Saturday evening. The Sooners have a 2-0-0 all-time record against Mizzou, winning by scores of 11-0 and 8-1 in home games played in October 2003.

LAST OU HOCKEY GAMES – Oklahoma played consistent hockey for two of the three periods each night this past week on the way to 5-2 and 6-2 home wins over Arizona State. RANKINGS – The Sooners are ranked 7th in the latest ACHA Coaches Division 1 ranking. The full ranking is listed below. The next ranking is scheduled to be released on November 2nd.

Forward Jared Semple (5G-3A-8pts) leads Adrian in scoring, followed by Jason Knutson (2-2-4) and Mark Wood (2-1-3). HAHAHA. We may have a lot of penalty minutes, but that just means more chances to kill the penalty!

For the Week of October 22, 2007

    SOONERS SWEEP SUN DEVILS

No. 7 OKLAHOMA HOSTS ADRIAN AND MISSOURI THIS WEEK

Each night, the Sooners jumped out to early leads in the first period only to relax in the second stanza to let ASU back into the games. However, the Sooners turned up the intensity and scored three goals in the third period of each game to pull away from the Sun Devils and sweep the weekend series.

Goaltender Ryan Krichiver has logged the most minutes in goal for the Bulldogs this season and sports a 4.41 goals against average so far this season.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS – Missouri finished last season ranked 7th in the ACHA D2 Central region and plays in the tough D2 Mid-American Collegiate Hockey Association. Re: ***THE OFFICIAL OU HOCKEY THREAD***

    OKLAHOMA 7, ADRIAN 5

An uninspired performance from the 7th-ranked University of Oklahoma® Hockey club almost resulted in the first home loss of the season. However, the Sooners overcame their sluggish and undisciplined play to beat Adrian College 7-5 Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

Forward Doug Gebbie (Frisco, TX) tipped in a shot from the point on a 5-on-3 power play to give OU a quick 1-0 lead just 6:16 into the game. Just over a minute later, forward Owen Brewer (Kenai, AK) scored on the remaining power play at 7:18 to give the Sooners a two goal cushion. The teams traded two goals each, with defenseman Austin Miller (Dallas, TX) and forward Sean McCauley (Naperville, IL) scoring for Oklahoma, to make the score 4-2 after the first twenty minutes of action.

In the second period, forward Kyle Allan (Flagstaff, AZ) scored a short handed goal to give the Sooners a 5-2 lead. McCauley scored again on the power play to put OU up 6-2 ad it appeared as if the rout was on. However, the visiting Bulldogs had other ideas, scoring two goals before the end of the second period and a power play goal in the third to pull within one goal of the Sooners at 6-5. Adrian could not convert on late power play chances or when they pulled their goaltender with 20 seconds to go as they tried to tie the game. But Allan secured the win for OU with an empty netter with three ticks left on the clock. Allan's goal, his 11th of the season, secured the 7-5 win for the Sooners.

Sooners goaltender Rob Mattison stopped 16 of 21 shots he faced tonight. Adrian's Ryan Krichiver stopped 35 of the 34 OU shots he saw tonight. Oklahoma was 3 for 13 on the power play while Adrian was 1 for 8.

The Sooners are now 7-1-0 on the season while Adrian falls to 1-6-0. Oklahoma plays home games against the University of Missouri on Friday and Saturday.
