Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
Sounds like he will still have OU in his top 3-5, but at least he is honest. Nothing wrong with going and visiting other schools, and seeing what they have to offer.
Sounds like his brother could be a package deal, OU could end up offering him as well.
Utilimately, in Jan-Feb when he makes his decesion I still think he puts on the OU hat.
OU should land him and Banrnett for in state OL Signees.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
Took Wariboko off, and I still need to add Johnson (DB)...just haven't gotten around to doing it...
I'm not very concerned about the de-commitment. He's going to be a good player (and I think he will still end up at OU)...Barnett is the kid I really want.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
These verbal commitments aren't worth the paper they're written on.

PJ Mbanasor just committed to us.
Nice pick up.
High school teammate of Perine's although seemingly not too close.

Nice to get top guys from the Austin area.

For all the hand wringing, we recruit Texas pretty damn well.

Sorry to call your statement out on this, but we have not recruited Texas well for nearly 10 years. Since 2004 when Adrian Peterson was named a 1st team all-American, we have had (2) two Texas players make a 1st team all-American team -- Trent Williams and Duke Robinson. During this 10 year stretch there have been 50-60 Texas high school players make 1st team all-American. In 2013 alone, there were (8) eight. We may still recruit productive players out of Texas, but it is nothing like OU experienced from the 1950s through 2004. Not sure what has happened over the past 10 years, but something has.
A&M already has commitments from 2 of the top 4 Texas players for 2015 and look to end up with 3 of the top 4. In years past OU would have 3 or 4 of the top 20 Texas players annually. This just doesn't happen anymore. Fortunately, we have made up for some of this drop by recruiting California well and picking off individual talent in various states to the east.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
I'm not going to pick a fight with you on this. You clearly have mustered facts and figures that are arrayed to support your opinion. I am not going to micro-analyze our recruiting of Texas or the subsequent performance of our Texas-origin recruits and turn this into some sort of accountant's bun fight. The proof is in the pudding: we've played for how many NC's in the last decade? More than most. And were damned close the last time we played in one (one DeMarco short, in my opinion). And have had our share of victories, too. (yes, we've dropped games we shouldn't have, but some of that is going to happen). And we've done all this with a team that consistently has more Texans on it than players from any other state, if I'm not mistaken.
So, you can stand on your opinion; I'll keep mine: when a team has that many Texas players and produces as much success as ours has....it kind of follows that we're not recruiting Texas that badly. (not that I wouldn't want better results, mind you. I am at heart a Chinaman.)
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
IMO Both of the 2 posts above have good points.
We have done fairly well overall in recruiting. Part of that is that we have benefitted from high quality coaching, and of course, good recruits from states other than tx. aTm and the baylorbears have both improved their recruiting, and it has hurt us in tx.
Duke Robinson was from Atlanta, I remember reading. Am I wrong? (FWIW)
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
We used to recruit Texas pretty damn well. Now, we do sort of okay to good in Texas.
And yes, Duke was from Atlanta, and I don't mean Atlanta Texas.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
Would you concede that some of the decline from 'damn well' to 'pretty good' has had to do with folks like Jermie Calhoun and Trey Metoyer not working out once they got to college? Both were won in recruiting dog fights and then ... 'pfft', fizzle. Might not explain all of it, but it seems to me that is explains at least some of the perceived 'lack' in our recruiting.

Guess I had a brain fart when I mentioned Duke Robinson as I knew he was from Georgia. Well, make that 1 first team all-American since 2004 from Texas. KS, not trying to be argumentative or pick on you. I totally agree with your comments about Texas recruiting over the long-haul as I made the same point. But I think the facts bear out that our recruiting in Texas (since 2004) has fallen off substantially. Yes we still get our numbers, but the quality has diminished over the years. Never said recruiting (overall) has fallen off. We have made up for it by recruiting other areas of the country well.
I have followed Texas recruiting closely since I was a young boy as my father recruited for Wilkinson, Jones, McKenzie, Fairbanks, and Switzer (back when alumni could do that sort of thing). My point is OU used to be on nearly half of the tier I recruit lists back in the day and would get its fair share of commits. Some would work out and others, not so much. Sometimes it's tier II recruits that rise to stardom. Just haven't seen much of either in recent years. Look at the top 10-20 Texas recruits for 2015 and you will scarcely see OU mentioned.
As for playing for NCs, we have played for 1 since 2004. As I recall, the all-american talent on the 2008 team was largely from Oklahoma and elsewhere (Bradford, Gresham, Murray, Broyles, Loadholdt, Brown, etc. Williams was from Longview and falls into this category. The other Texas starters at that time were solid role players, but not in the category of the collective Texas talent that preceeded them.
Jut my opinion
Texas is in our backyard and it needs to remain our lifeblood for recruiting (along with in-state recruits). Would just like to see better results there......that's all.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 1/13/2014
HTW, Entirely fair. Obviously, various of our staff members had gotten a little old/stale/lazy/burned out whatever. And Bob's addressed that, at least in large part. We're probably still behind the curve in the sophistication of our overall recruiting machine. I hear rumblings that that's changing, too, however. (things like satellite camps, legal but coordinated transport to events in Norman, a better presence on social media). And we know that facilities are getting attention.
So, the overall effort is not being ignored.
I think we also need to concede that the world changes. TT, ATM, Baylor and TCU are all much more attractive than they once were. Hell, even Houston is going after players and for God's sake NTSU is providing room and board for some guys. it's a far more competitive environment than 30 years or more ago.
Stoops is doing the right thing, I believe, by moving OU to being more of a national brand. It's likely never again going to be us and UT alone in Texas. If UT chooses to stick to in-state as their concentration, good luck. I'd rather be pulling kids from Cali, NJ, Florida and, hell, even Hawaii and Samoa if we can.
Not ignoring Texas (and particularly east Texas where we seem to be a leetle thin on the ground.)
I guess my point was that I'd rather stay positive and encourage the steps that are being taken. As the Sugar Bowl showed, we're simply not that far off the pace.
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 6/8/2014
Finally updated the commitment list. I'll try to stay on top of it (hopefully I'll be busy over the next few weeks/months).

Why do folk get all excited over some Kid sayin hes gonna play for uys in the Future? Im happy they considering us But come on 1/2 these kids gonna change their minds before signing day Look at the Anderson? Kid, he committed to eaTme then changed to us and still almost a year away from signing anything. Ill wait and see when they Hit the field and get excited then LOL
Re: 2015 Football verbal commits: Updated 6/8/2014
Why get excited? Because off season. What else is there? MLB? Good to turn on if you're going to nap on the couch for the afternoon. World Cup? Ditto unless you happen to stumble across the one exciting game of the year. Or decade. Other than that, reruns or recruiting. it's not much, but it's something.
