How did Major Applewhite land the Houston job following Herman's move to sa*et? Well, you will say, he was the OC there and was the reason Herman won 22 games at Houston, at least that is what Hermie said. Let's look at this a little closer. Tommyboy goes to sa*et. His OC, who happened to QB at UT as well as hold several coaching positions there including serve as Mack's final OC, is promoted to take over. Houston didn't even bother to open the envelopes holding the resumes of any other candidates. There are a lot of cross connections between these two schools it seems. Why question this? The Major carries some baggage. In 2013 there was a situation at UT involving a women's track coach and a student athlete. The coach was subsequently let go. It was during all of this that it came out she was not the first coach to get in hot water for this. It seems the Major was involved in some extra-curricular activity with a student trainer during a bowl game trip but the only discipline he received was a salary freeze and a stern talking to or maybe he had to go to a class. The thing is, his deal had been swept under the carpet where it remained hidden for 4 years, it happened in 2009. It wasn't until the other incident that his affair saw the light of day because the UT administration had kept it under wraps. There was talk that Opie would never advance in the coaching profession as a result of this. Once more, it's not the crime, it's the cover up that gets you into trouble. But here he is leading the Cougars while his old boss coaches where he used to work. Is there more here than meets the eye? Does this one pass the smell test? Did sa*et boosters do a bit of tit for tat with the Houston administration to make things happen? I think this one is a candidate for a coaching conspiracy.
