To distract from current football and mens basketball seasons, I thought it would be fun to start a womens basketball blog here, where we can all brag about the fact that we have had one of the best womens basketball programs in recent history. Currently, the women stand at 6-1 and are ranked No. 20. However, this is a question that really needs answering: WHO IS JOANNA MCFARLAND?! I am looking through the box scores, and this "Joanna McFarland" racked up 19 minutes last night and shot 3 for 6 and got 5 rebounds and 2 blocks... and get this: NO turnovers. Whoever this "Joanna McFarland" is, she sounds like exactly the type of player OU needs. Anyway, here is a link to an interview with her on SS.com and her profile, also at SS.com, but that's all I know about Joanna McFarland... freshman... forward... So, welcome to blogging wimmens basketball. Please add any and all thoughts on OU womens basketball. I will try to update at least once a week. I know this ain't the same team it was last year with the Paris twins and the hopes and dreams of going to the Final Four and returning scholarship money if CP3 doesn't return home with a championship, but I'm still excited. Boomer!
Well, the women's team 'avenged' our San Diego loss, of sorts, by routing a ranked San Diego State team 87-48 in the Virgin Islands. I'm not sure how these pre-scheduled tournaments work, but I guess they play Notre Dame today kind of for the championship of the Paradise Jam. The team moves to 4-1 now.
Oh, hell, Joanna McFarland is the girl from Derby? She's freakin' good. If the Wichita Eagle didn't have a retarded website I'd tell you to search there for articles about her.
It is so good to see that others are interested in women's basketball. Here, have a Sherri Coale pic: I am really started to get annoyed with Notre Dame's team. Most OU fans already hate Notre Dame because the 47-streak never became 48, but seriously, the only team I might dislike more than them outside our confernece in WBB right now is Stanford (grrrrrr, stupid fake ivy league school trees). (that #53 is the "Joanna McFarland" in question from last week) The domers are ranked No. 5, so this loss probably won't kill our standings nationally, and I love that our team plays quality opponents early in the season. Also, a 10-point loss is not the end of the world when your top scorer (D-Rob) is in foul trouble and Bobby Knight's favorite women's player ever is out with a knee injury. That being said, we are now 6-2 and until polls say otherwise, we are still the No. 20 team in the country. GET WELL, WHITNEY HAND! Maybe Whitney got injured so that bf Landry wouldn't? If so, that's takin' one for Sooner Nation!
Any word on Whitney's injury other then knee?? Most the time when it comes to wimmins sports.. and ou wimmins basketball.. knees=ACL
You guys ready for more sh!tty injury news after all that you've heard the past few months? Hand's out for the season, leaving only nine players on roster. Link I am really, really saddened by this. The injury bug never relents
Man that sucks... There has been a lot of this at OU it seems.. Caton Hill, Erin Higgins, ETC .. I have Torn both of mine.. So has my wife.. She did both of hers in high school.. and still played basketball in college and I did one during college and one playing basketball out of college.... We both had OU dr. McGinnis.(best around IMHO) Im sure he will do Whitney's surgery as well... And I would think she is good for a redshirt.
Whitney never won a... um... Final Four game??? :O Seriously, I hope she gets her medical redshirt and I hope she returns to shooting 3's in a year. In the meantime, time for someone to step up and be a top scorer next to Danielle Robinson... hey, NYESHIA STEVENSON! I'm looking at YOU!
OK, it turns out I was looking at the wrong player: While all of sports is off looking at her concussion-filled brother's head, Carlee Roethlisberger stepped up when her team needed her most - filling the scoring gap left when Whitney Hand tore her ACL. ... ok, so maybe they didn't need Carlee's 29 (career high!) points when they beat UTSA 100 (yes another century game) to 67, but it is still pretty cool. The game was actually pretty close at half, with OU leading 42-41 (think Sherri broke a few chalkboards at half???), so I'm sure she provided the spark that everyone needed. Nyeshia also stepped up as I requested last time, scoring 21 points. Here is your token Sherri Coale pic. Note the awesome shoes: Once again, congrats to Carlee and Nyeshia on the great games and the entire team on hitting the century mark. EDIT: The women now stand at 7-2, with loses to Georgia and the stupid lady domers. They are ranked No. 18 in both the AP and ESPN/USAToday polls.
Keep up the blog. I can't add anything, but I am reading it. Thanks. My mom has season tickets again and she loves talking about Sooner women's basketball.
