ORU closed both its medical and dental schools because not enough of their graduates were going on medical missions largely due to the massive debt they amassed during school. A group of orthopedic surgeons opened the Orthopedic Hospital of Oklahoma (OHO) in 2001 as a for profit specialty hospital and it is doing quite well. Earlier this year the name was changed to Oklahoma Surgical Hospital as the specialties served expanded from only orthopedic surgery to general, plastics, and GYN surgery. A Sooner Buddy of mine had carpel surgery there the other morning. We picked him up as he wasn't supposed to drive after the procedure. The Coffee and donuts in the waiting room were very good.
The City of Faith was the first building Oral constructed with borrowed funds. Some of the Oral Roberts Association higher-ups argued against building the CoF, but lost the argument. Unfortunately, Oral should have listened to his executive committee.
So how does one build/create a university all his own? Did his family come from money? Yes I could go to the oru web site but what a yawn that would be.
The money came from donors - prayer cloths, seed money, etc.... Originally, they didn't construct any building, until they had the money in the bank. The Oral Roberts Association, prior to the university, was located in downtown Tulsa.
In the 50s and 60s OR was a faith healer then in the 70s he needed a hospital . Naw he needed a reason to cry for More Money Just sayin
I work with a very religious guy who is currently attending ORU. I asked him what lead him to the university. He had a surprising response: He wanted to know what it was about the place that made his brother lose his faith and go atheist.
