• The Road Warrior Report - 11/29/2011

Yes, it’s been a few weeks since we opined on Sooner football in this space, having used our time to opine about bigger things at Penn State and then taking a week off for the holiday, which only incidentally coincided with the Baylor debacle. We don’t shy away from talking about unpleasant things here.

So, the shine is off this year for the folks who see only a national championship as an acceptable outcome to the season. Those folks are disappointed a lot. The fact of the matter is that it’s rare to win a national title, even for the best programs, and rarer still to go undefeated. The sense of entitlement and expectation of both of those things each and every year is mystifying to us. The fact of the matter is that with the exception of the national title and an undefeated season, everything that was available to be won is still there to be won. Those of us, and there are very few, who have been to every game for the last 20 years or so have learned patience and perspective, things that are in short supply after Sooner losses. Personally, we tend to be over it once we walk out of the stadium. Much cleaner and easier that way.

We’re not going to really spend any time talking about the Iowa State game. Given the weather conditions and everything else, it was a solid win. The defense was decidedly better than a week before, although Iowa State is certainly not Baylor when it comes to throwing the football and it’s definitely not our next opponent in that department, either.

Say what you want about the BCS, but it looks like it’s gonna get it right this year. If you lost a game – no whining. You put it in the hands of the system and you get what you get. We still think that if the Sooners and Orange Aggy had both won a couple of weeks ago, we’d be playing for what is now Alabama’s spot in the title game. But we both spit the bit, and nobody has a legitimate beef. OSU and OU both have better wins than Bama, to be sure, but we lost to Tech, and Aggy lost to Iowa State. Even Hair Gel Guy had to publicly admit that he didn’t have a beef when Bama lost at home in OT by a field goal to the unanimous #1 team in the country, while OSU gave up three times as much passing yardage to Iowa State as the Sooners gave up to the Cyclones.

And it’s not gonna matter for OSU anyway, because they’re going to be 10-2 in a few days. We have never seen the Aggy so sure they’re gonna win against us. It will make it that much more delicious when we take them on their home field again. Don’t get us wrong – Aggy could win, and they could even win decisively. None of that would be a particular surprise. They have as good a chance to win as they ever have. If they win, they will receive full credit here.

However, Aggy has never – NEVER – beaten us when they had anything on the line, and has barely beaten us when they didn't. Until they show they can do it, we fully expect that they will, as usual, crap their pants at the sight of the paperclip logo. We only hope that the conference has the stage there and everything to do the trophy presentation right there on the field after the game, like they always did at the conference championship game.

Yes, we know Aggy’s getting a trophy no matter what, and technically they’ll be co-champs (K-State, too, if they win Farmageddon on Saturday), but claiming a co-championship is for losers. That’s why OSU’s website claimed it two Sundays ago. When we beat them and KSU on the road, there’s no tie. We will own it, and all the replica trophies in the world won’t change that.

We are going to procure some heavy-duty rain gear before Saturday night, as it looks to be cold and wet all evening. However, the annual dashing of Aggy dreams will be more than enough to keep us comfortably warm, although it will not keep us dry.

And now, we leave you with a sampling of true facts for your amusement.

The last time OSU beat OU:

Brandon Weeden was not of legal drinking age.

George Bush the younger was halfway through his first term.

      Gas was $1.34 a gallon.

      Facebook didn’t exist.

      Twitter didn’t exist.

      Bob Hope was alive.

The last time OSU won (OK, shared) a conference title:

      Brandon Weeden wasn’t born.

Gerald Ford was finishing out Richard Nixon’s term in the White House.

      Gas was $0.59 a gallon.

      The internet didn’t exist.

      Personal computers didn’t exist.

Bob Hope was still entertaining the troops.

The space shuttle was five years away from its first flight into space.

The last time OSU won a conference title outright:

      Brandon Weeden’s parents weren’t born.

OU and Oklahoma A&M were in different conferences.

      OU beat Oklahoma A&M.

Harry Truman was president, and “Dewey defeats Truman” was current news.

      Gas was $0.26 a gallon.

Regular commercial television broadcasts were brand new.

The Russians didn’t have the atomic bomb.

The Korean War was two years in the future.

      Douglas MacArthur ran Japan.

See you at New Rustoleum on Saturday night. The Arizona desert awaits once again after that.

Yes, one and the same. I haven't written for SI since 2005, when we founded Sooner Spectator Magazine. I still write for SS, though.

I'm with you on the National Championship or else crowd. Boy, if I quit going to games in the years we lost a game or two and didn't have a chance to win a NC I would have missed a lot of good football in the last 40 years.
