      NORMAN – So you stayed home. It’s Kansas, you said. We’re not gonna win any championships this year, you said. It’s gonna rain, you said. I’m tired of 11:00 a.m. kickoffs, you said. And we might have even agreed with you on some of those.

      But we didn’t stay home, just like we never do. And as a result, on a cold, rainy, miserable day in Norman, we saw what you missed – Samaje Perine uncorking the greatest single-game rushing performance in major college football history in a 44-7 OU rout. And it was worth every cold, wet, miserable minute.


      We got to chant “Pe-rine, Pe-rine!” We got to go bonkers when Perine obliterated Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon’s week-old record of 408 yards with a 42-yard carry early in the fourth quarter. We got to see all 427 yards and all five touchdowns. But you missed it. Because you stayed home.

      We wrote recently about how the way the season has worked out this year makes it easier to appreciate and enjoy these last few games for what they are – the last of the very few opportunities to watch Oklahoma football each year. We wouldn’t miss a game for anything, regardless of whether we’re in the hunt for championships. Every game can be something special that you will always remember. Like today.

      While Perine’s record was obviously a big deal and the biggest story in this game, the Sooner defense put forth perhaps their best performance of the season. They completely shut down a Kansas offense that shredded TCU a week ago for 418 yards, holding the Jayhawks to 103 yards.

      Passing was tough in the steady, cold rain, but the Jayhawks gave it a shot, tossing the ball 23 times on the day, completing only eight. The Sooners were even worse, as Cody Thomas was only 3 of 13 on the day, although there were many drops due to the wet conditions. Not sure why we threw it 13 times, but there it is.

      And so, we are down to one regular season game to play. It seems only yesterday we were kicking off the season. But, that’s how it goes every year – time runs more quickly during football season.

      Two weeks from today, OSU comes to town. Hopefully those of you who stayed home today will make it then, regardless of the weather. Somehow I think we see a more traditional baby seal clubbing this year instead of the nail-biters we’ve been playing with little brother over the last few years. See you there. Happy Thanksgiving.

        Great write! The reason we go to the games is to see OUr team! Some institutions do NOT get it! Even when the "little" brother up north has a major game, they still do not sell out. I heard Jim Trabor say he wouldn't go to a game like this, if he wasn't working, and a fan came by after the game, and said: "This is why we go to the games!" We were there, but my husband came down with a terrible toothache, and we had to listen to the rest on the radio driving home. It was the first time we ever left early, and we have been going for over 40 years! Luckily, I found the complete playback at 5:00 AM, and recorded so I could see it.

        Like I had posted in another forum. I took my twin boys to see the game, and they where troopers. They "EAT UP" all the pregame, halftime activities, and the cherry on top was watching Perine Crush the rushing record. For 10 year old boys to hopefully be able to tell others many years from now..."I was at that rainy game with Dad!"
