• The Road Warrior Report - Baylor Review - November 8, 2014

NORMAN - We have ingested alcohol as a direct result of the negative outcome of a sporting event exactly once. That was when our Houston Oilers choked up a 32-point third-quarter lead and lost a playoff game to Buffalo in 1993. Today will make twice, when we get back to the house after writing this in the car on the way home.

The 48-14 destruction of the Sooners by Baylor today, coupled with Trevor Knight leaving on a stretcher, deserves to be right up there with the biggest choke job in NFL history, and requires drinking as a response.

Remember that feeling after the Sugar Bowl? It's the exact opposite of how you feel now. It's certainly the exact opposite of how we feel now. After today, we're starting to think that Bama really didn't care about that game, like Nick Saban said in July.

Of course, it's rarely as simple as any fan likes to make it, but the bottom line is that we got our asses kicked at home by Baylor by 34 points. At home. By Baylor. By 34 points. Did we mention it was Baylor? At home? By 34 points? To put it in perspective, the last time we lost worse at home was on the frigid night of November 15, 1997, when R.C. Slocum's Texas Aggies blew out John Blake's hapless Sooners 51-7.

The naysayers wrote this season off after the KSU loss. As you all know, we are not naysayers, but we are realists. The reality before today was that we were five points, or a couple of interceptions, or a couple of one-yard gains (however you preferred to look at it) from being undefeated.

And the reality after today is that this is now officially a lost season. Bob Stoops' streak of even-year conference championships will end in 2014. There will be no New Years bowl game. A week and a day into November, and we are just playing out the string. Not nearly the November 2014 we envisioned late in the evening of January 2, 2014, is it?

But, that's the nature of being a Sooner fan. Most of the time we win. Sometimes we lose. Sometimes (rarely) we get our asses kicked. And so it was today.

We will go to Lubbock next weekend, and the Kansas game, and the OSU game, and whatever low-rent bowl game we end up with, because that is what we do. And this team will probably finish 10-3, and we'll still feel like it was a complete failure of a season. And we are still proud to be committed to a school and a team where that kind of season is an abject failure. We remember when it was so, so, so much worse.

And when August of 2015 rolls around, we won't be in the top five, and we won't be expected to win the conference. And maybe that's exactly what we need.

Congratulations to Baylor. A better team than us from top to bottom, regardless of whether it should be that way or not.

We are going to stop thinking about this game now, forever. We suggest you do the same.

      See you in Lubbock. Boomer.
