• The Road Warrior Report - November 1, 2014 - Iowa State Review

AMES, IOWA – We are some of the relatively few people who have seen Oklahoma lose to Iowa State in person. That was 24 years ago. It will be at least 25 years between Cyclone wins in the series (and better be a lot longer than that) after the Sooners’ 59-14 demolition of Iowa State today in Ames.

It is easier to go over the few negatives than the many positives in this game. Three picks, two thrown by Trevor Knight, were not good, although none of them caused any real damage other than keeping the Sooners from breaking 60 points. One of Knight’s picks was thrown into coverage when nobody was close to open, and the other one was a late cross-body throw late across the middle of the field, another no-no.

More importantly, Sterling Shepard played no more after injuring his groin on a 46-yard reception on OU’s first offensive snap of the game and immediately leaving the field on a cart. Supposedly, he could have returned if needed, but he wasn’t needed. Hopefully, he will be available next week.

In Shepard’s absence, several other receivers finally stepped up. Michiah Quick had 8 catches for 56 yards, while Durron Neal added 5 for 60. Blake Bell also had a pair of catches, both for touchdowns.

The passing game wasn’t really needed anyway, as the Sooners demolished ISU’s undersized offensive line in the running game. Knight (16 carries for 146 yards and 3 TDs), Alex Ross (13 for 144) and Samaje Perine (17 for 110 and a TD) all surpassed 100 yards. Overall, the Sooners pounded the Cyclones for 510 yards rushing as part of a staggering 751 yards of total offense. This game was a total mismatch, and there’s really not a lot more to be said about it.

It shaped up to be a cold one in Ames – heading out to the game it was about 20 degrees. However, things warmed up, and it ended up to be quite a nice day to watch a game, if a bit chilly. Nevertheless, we are not used to it being so cold on November 1. Ultimately, watching the Sooners beat ISU in Ames is just something one does every couple of years, then moves on to the next game, and so it was today.

To be sure, Iowa State is most ungood at the football, and this performance must be seen in that light. Nevertheless, it was a good win and a good note for the team with Baylor coming to town next Saturday. That will be a bit more challenging than this one. See you at Owen Field. Hopefully not at 11 a.m. again (they will totally make us play at 11 a.m. again.)

Told ya. It was set in stone the minute Oberkrom's kick went through in Morgantown. No way the Ags were gonna beat KSU, so . . . brunch it is. Again.

I was truly impressed with the second string coming in at the end of the third quarter and playing the entire fourth. David Smith is REALLY good, and I liked the poise of Cody Thomas. The defense looked good, too. Makes you not worry as much if key players come down with injuries.....
