Another UT Football Player Arrested (http://www.kxan.com/Global/story.asp?S=7091356)
Sep 18, 2007 09:37 AM

Another University of Texas football player is in trouble with the law. Sophomore running back James Henry, 19, was arrested overnight.

Henry is in jail on two charges: obstruction or retaliation and tampering or fabricating physical evidence. Both offenses are third-degree felonies.

He is being held on a $30,000 bond.

Henry is the 11th UT player, or former player, arrested since the national championship in January 2006.

mack brown is such a fraud. it is too funny how he's able to use smoke and mirrors to fool the legions of naive horn dip****s. it's starting to catch up with him now. lol. me thinks the bonghorn season is on the brink of disaster. very possible 6 to 7 win season, several more arrest and a ncaa investigation to boot. get ready to enjoy the show. vince young is no longer head coach of that team, and they are in for a very rough ride for the next few years. after they lose to ksu then get waxed by us, that team will mail it in for the season. everybody will tee off on them. it's going to be fun to watch.

lack of institutional control anyone?

This is not what "lack of institutional control" mean.

The NCAA definition of institutional control is that a member school must have adequate policies and procedures in place to detect and deal with NCAA rules violations. If no such policies and procedures are in place or if the member school does not show willingness to follow their policies and procedures, then a "lack of institutional control" finding may be made. Since players committing crimes does not typically fall under the rubric of NCAA violations, no such finding would be appropriate here.

Common misunderstanding.

If things keep going the way they are down in Austin at this pace, it won't be long before Mack Brown gets crucified in front of the press and gets his butt canned just like Switzer. Oh wait, he wasn't fired. They FORCED his so-called "resignation." I think what will be key is how Mack and the University continues to deal with these situations that determines if and what consequences they may or not face.

That's too bad. While I would normally be ecstatic over this happening to the whorns, if it eventually happens, they might actually find a replacement who can actually COACH... not just recruit. On the upside of that, if the NCAA smacks them down anywhere near as bad as they did to us in the late 80's, good coach or no good coach, they won't win for years!

After what happened to OU, I never thought the NCAA would ever come down on a program again as hard as they did on OU and SMU back in the day. I'm still not sure that they will ever do that again. But texass is certainly testing that idea.

Not sure there's any way to say this without ****ing everyone off, but -- there's really nothing quite like seeing OU fans gloating about another team's character issues.

In college football, isn't that like saying "We have an assistant coach and helmets!" "Oh, we, too, have an assistant coach and helmets! Take that!"

For what it's worth I don't go sprinting off to Hornfans or anywhere else to post madly about when the Sooners vacate a seasonful of wins. I enjoy it -- but getting smug about it seems like something that comes back to bite ya.

Here is a little more from ESPN:

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/clubhouse?teamId=251) freshman running back James Henry (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=183432) has been charged with two felony counts of obstruction and tampering with evidence, making him the sixth Longhorns player arrested since June.
http://assets.espn.go.com/photo/2007/0918/ncf_a_henry_195.jpg AP Photo/Austin Police Dept.
Texas freshmman James Henry, shown in an Austin Police mug shot, is the sixth Longhorn to be arrested since June. Henry, who was arrested Monday, is accused of beating up one of the victims of a July home invasion that allegedly involved two other players, Andre Jones and Robert Joseph. Henry was booked into Travis County Jail where his bail was set at $30,000. He was suspended indefinitely from the team, coach Mack Brown said Tuesday.

Henry, who redshirted last season, has played in two games on special teams for the No. 7 Longhorns (3-0).

Austin police learned of Henry's involvement by listening to taped recordings of Joseph's phone calls from jail, said Det. Anthony Bigongiari. During the investigation of the robbery, one of the victims told police that some of Joseph's friends had assaulted them. In one of the taped phone calls, Henry said he "went over there and whupped" one of the victims, who told police they were thrown on the ground and punching and kicked in the head several times, Bigongiari said.

Henry, who did not participate in the robbery, was charged with tampering because police believe he disposed of a backpack containing items stolen in the home invasion, Bigongiari said.

Police also charged a third person, Eddie Ramirez, who is not a football player, with threatening the victims.
Brown said Henry would have been suspended earlier if the team had known the latest allegations.

"It's unfortunate that we have just been informed of the situation or we would have been able to address it when it allegedly occurred in July," Brown said.

Henry's arrest is the latest trouble for a program reeling under a string of arrests. On Monday, Brown reinstated linebacker Sergio Kindle and defensive end Henry Melton, who had been suspended for the first three games because of drunken driving arrests over the summer.

Last week, senior safety Tyrell Gatewood was suspended indefinitely after his arrest on drug charges. Freshman defensive back Ben Wells, who was riding with Gatewood when he was pulled over, was given a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia and released.

Jones remains suspended from the team. Joseph had already left the team before his July arrest because of an earlier incident.

Brown said he is disappointed that the arrests have embarrassed the program but challenged the notion that Texas is riddled with problems.

"Young people who do not obey the law, university or team rules will continue to be disciplined with a stern hand and we will move forward. We continue to have a zero tolerance policy in that regard," Brown said. "I will put our long-term record of character up against anyone, and that's why these situations upset me so much."

Montana CB Wilson charged in shooting death of aunt's boyfriend
Associated Press

LANCASTER, Calif. -- Suspended University of Montana cornerback Jimmy Wilson pleaded not guilty Monday to a murder charge stemming from the shooting death of his aunt's 29-year-old boyfriend. Wilson is charged in the June 3 shooting death of Kevin I. Smoot in Lancaster, about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles. The player also faces a special allegation that he personally and intentionally discharged a rifle. Wilson's aunt and Smoot had been fighting the night Smoot was shot, authorities said. Wilson, of Pasadena, remained in custody in a Los Angeles jail on $2 million bail. He is scheduled to appear in court again for a pretrial hearing on Sept. 27. Wilson surrendered to California authorities on June 12 and was suspended from the Montana football team a few days later.

Someones comments on the blog after the article:

By Doug

September 18, 2007 2:39 PM | Link to this

1. What do you call a drug ring in Austin? A huddle.

2. Four UT Longhorns in a car, who's driving? The police.

3. The UT Longhorns have adopted a new "Honor System". Yes your
Honor, No your Honor.

4. The UT Longhorns knew they had to do something for their defense,
so they hired a new defensive coordinator: F. Lee Bailey.

5. How do the UT Longhorns spend their first week at fall practice?
Studying their Miranda Rights.

6. What do you say to a Longhorn in a suit? Will the defendant
please rise?

7. If you see Longhorn football player on a bike, why don't you
swerve to hit him? It might be your bike!

8. The Longhorns employ scouts. But to look out for cops, not to
scout high school kids.

9. I heard a rumor that the Texas Department of Corrections plans to
build a new prison in Austin, Texas in order to allow Longhorns to
walk to school.

10. What do you call it, when a Longhorn goes on vacation? Time off
for good behavior.

11. Why couldn't the Longhorn get into a huddle on the football
field? It's a parole violation to associate with known felons.

12. Obviously Coach Mack Brown is not paying his players if they
have to resort to robbing people.

13. Book 'em, Horns!

#4 may become a new Sig - Defensive Coordinator = F. Lee Bailey. Classic :texan:

This is rich. The spin on this latest arrest is that it was for an incident that happened two months ago for which two other players were already arrested. Therefore, all three of those should only count as one.

If you're referring to the Boner BRSI incident, apples and oranges.

Having dumb *** kids who hook up with dumb *** boosters to try and pull off some dumb *** scheme is one thing. And let's not forget how that was handled by the coaching staff and university.

Fielding a team of felons, for armed burglary and kiddie rape among other things, is quite another. Especially considering how your coaching staff has handled it.

The whole "OU fans are hypocrites because their players get in trouble" crap is played out and tired. Having seven players arrested in four months, not to mention what has gone on over the past few years, while your head coach sits on the sidelines and claps, trumps anything that has happened here in a comparable amount of time.

I think all Sooner fans at the Red River Shootout should hold up mug shots with signs that say "Book 'em Horns!" That would be classic.

Horns were overjoyed.

Can't say a thing other than that. The myspace page is an embarassement and I don't understand why those aren't monitored.

For me, I don't think the issue here is the monitoring of the myspace pages, but rather that individuals who are supposed to be college students are displaying such behavior. The problem is the attitude their message conveys, not the fact that their messages become public.

By the way, this problem is everywhere, not just in Austin. Whatever happened to character in this country?

Henry was once commited to us, the switched to jailbird U.

In reality though I think Stoops pulled his ship because he knew he was trouble. ;)
Doesn't bother me,those Horns need to be taken down a few pegs.

Statesman.com - Gatewood arrested again (http://www.statesman.com/blogs/content/shared-gen/blogs/austin/longhorns/entries/2007/10/07/gatewood_arrest.html)
By Suzanne Halliburton | Sunday, October 7, 2007, 12:31 PM

Former Longhorn safety Tyrell Gatewood is in Travis County Jail, waiting to post bail on two misdemeanor drug charges.

He was arrested Saturday night for marijuana possession and for possession on a controlled substance.

It was his second arrest in a month. Gatewood, who had been in his final semester with the football team, was suspended indefinitely Sept. 13 on possession charges. Texas coach Mack Brown said he could return to the team only if he cleared up his legal problems.

If we're comparing former players to former players, you might still have to spot UT a couple of life sentences or so. Tired

Yep, you must be tired of Whorns getting arrested in recent years but he is one who they just said on the local news (here in Austin) that he has been suspended indefinitely, not dismissed from the team or school. So he is technically NOT a former player, just a suspended player.

Suspended != expelled. He's still on scholarship. He's a horn.

Assuming Dusty was suspended indefinitely (v. actually kicked off), the situation is different because Dusty didn't do anything while he was on suspension/expulsion.

What I still find humorous after living in the Austin area for 23 years is that one of the excuses ut has worn out over the years is that they lose to us and other teams because their standards are so much higher and they recruit student/athletes. Truly hilarious. Most of the guys I've seen come though there couldn't speak basic English, let alone spell. The only difference this year has been they are actually getting caught and not getting off the charges.

Most? How about some names then sport. And when you say "most," that necessarily means, since there are 85 on scholarship at any one time, most would include at least 43. So, let's see your list with some substantive facts to support the list.

Then, why not compile a list of football players at UT who have become academically ineligible or kicked out for not making the grades... Then, compile a similar list for OU.

Should be interesting.

Sport? Oh my, aren't you clever. It would probably be easier to name the ones who could actually speak English,.....................sport. Typical whorn with their burnt orange glasses. Your program is no different than any other as far as the athletes you recruit and the academic programs they are exposed to. Seems like the whorns have been near the bottom of the B12 in graduation rates while we have been mid to upper. Keep kidding yourself,..............sport.

No it doesn't.

Re-read his quote counselor, he specifically said "most of the guys I've seen..."

So it could be as little as 2 out of 3, if he's only had the chance to interact with 3 players.

I know you can name at least one.

From a thread Lid started last year:

Me: Who knew that Taylor was flunking out prior to the Rose Bowl?
Lid: Taylor was cleared to play in the Rose Bowl as at that time,
his grades were compliant with the NCAA minimum requirements.

"Tough" Mack/UT standards and NCAA requirements become quite flexible when the NC is on the line.

UT is no different than any other school in that regard. My cousin played there, and he was a national merit scholar who went on to an Ivy League law school. Meanwhile he laughed that a certain running back that was there in the 80s and early 90s (who always referred to himself in the 3rd person) was essentially mentally retarded and that he could barely spell his own name.

Bottom line...Texas is a great academic institution, but Texas athletes are no smarter than Kansas State's or anyone else's.

Oh, it's Chief now. You are quite clever. :D I'm sure there are some ut football players that have some grasp of the English language but let me just say that quite a number of the ones that Mack actually let speak for themselves, or possibly the ones who they couldn't stop from speaking before they could get to them, were quite comical in their language arts. And no, I don't usually jot down the names of whorn football players who make asses of themselves. Just like I don't write down every incoming call on my cell. But I do know there have been quite a few of both.........Chief. :D How many credits was VY away from that phd? How about Ramonce? How about Lovell Pinkney? Edwin Simmons? Ricky could speak fairly well but the fog in his head made comprehensive statements a challenge. Wait, strike Ricky. He wasn't a true texan, being from California and all. James Henry's MySpace - we'll just leave it at that. Not really worth the time to go on. Oh, and I don't really hate ut. That would be like hating my dog after he came home from getting hit in the head by a car. He's still fun to watch sometimes, in a sad kind of way.
